Palk's Players' Player Preview

Players' Player is this Saturday August 30 @ The Seven Stars. Can get there from 6-6.30 - find a table, order food and drink, place your wagers. Count starts at 7pm. If you haven't RSVP'd please do.

So these are my thought on who is going to win the Players' Player Awards - I circulated my picks earlier in the week but here are my picks for each team. There are 3 or 4 guys in most teams who will poll well. This is my guide - I haven't listed everyone and I have been wrong in the past.

A's
Palky's Pick - Jack Harford
Jack will poll well - he does ever year ... that is a fact. The only 4 time winner. Jack is not a clear favourite but who I am backing.

Other picks:
Phil Harford - Phil is leading the team in total points and average, he has the highest points average of any A's player since Nic Blair. Played 1 more game than Jack.
Josh Orken - Orks is just tall so he will poll well based on that alone. Orks is averaging 12+ a game, would lead the team in boards, blocks, dunks and quips. Played 2 more games than Jack.

Dark Horse:
Jon Foo - Fooey has had some huge games this year and will have his best year in the polls.

B's
Palky's Pick - Jono Self
Jono had a massive start to the year - he top scored in 5 of the first 6 games. He has played the most games (along with Mike and Gus) and is leading the team in scoring.

Other picks:
Angus Crawford - Gus has had a huge 2nd half of the year and has been the team's best player. It took him a little while to get settled - when Lachie went out with injury he really took over.
Mike Hill - Mike hasn't had a big scoring year but does a lot of the little things that get votes.

Dark Horse:
Phill Farrer - Phill has started every game - gets loads of boards, has some big scoring games, plays great D and works so hard. Those things get votes.

C's
Palky's Pick - Andrew Good
Goody has played 1 less game than G (and he isn't playing this Saturday) but don't think that will matter. He is the rock in the middle, gets all the D boards and is the team's 2nd leading scorer. Historically Goody polls poorly in these things, think that will change this year.

Other picks:
Nathan Graham - G has had some massive games and some quiet games this year but he gets votes (he has won 3 of things before). Played the most games - can't count him out.
Brad Hughes - Brad has been the best player on court in a few games I have watched this year - he has played a decent amount of games and will poll well.

Dark Horse:
Tim Wong - BB has had a great year - he is the heart and soul of the team. Will get a lot of people's "1 votes" which could see him at the top of the leader board at the end of the night.

D's
Palky's Pick - Stu MacDonald
This is the hardest one to pick - with 5 guys in contention and the other 3 able to steal some votes in key weeks. Stu has had some ridiculous games this year - 20 and 30 against Unley and has been the most consistent throughout the season. He has played the 2nd most games which is vital.

Other Picks:
Brendon Francesca - Brenno will poll very well - he gets you 6-12 points every game. He rebounds well, runs the break hard and hustles. He has played all games and will be there abouts at the end of the season.
Ned Young - Ned has the best average and will poll well in the 12 games he plays. Just depends if he gets lots of votes in the games he has played with Stu and Brendon.
Jon Read - The Road Train is the key to the team's defence. With guards and forwards forcing tough shots, Jon gets all the defensive boards. Will depend how his team mates value his defence compared to Stu, Brendon and Ned's offense.

Dark Horse:
Chris Woodrow - Kobe has been consistent all year, pounds the glass, finishes inside and on the break ... he's won one of the before so he does get votes.

E's
Palk's Pick - Alex Bubner
Bubs would have to be the clear favourite - leads the team in scoring, has become a much improved FT shooter and can score when the offense is struggling. Only thing that might hurt Bubs is in easy wins where he scores lots - people tend to vote for the guys who play D to set up the scorer (Donaldson Effect) so he might not get votes in some wins that were easy. Bubs has played the most games (along with Rough and Max)

Other Picks:
Brad Daniel - Brad is the team's best rebounder, the team's 2nd leading scorer ... he is the scoring option when the game slows to a half court. He will poll well.
Matt Just - Roughie doesn't score a lot but he leads the team defensively and is a willing passer on offence - that gets votes. As good as Bubs is in O, Matt is in D - so wouldn't be surprised if he won.

Dark Horse: Dan Foo - wow ... didn't see that coming did you? Foo has had some cracking games this year. He will get some 3 vote games ... he is quiet and unassuming ... guys like that get votes*.

F's
Palk's Pick - Tim Corbel
This is my lock - Tim will win ... there is no two ways about it. Best player in the team, best scorer, best defender, best passer - good leader, likeable ... he will win. Only thing that could stop him is he played 2-4 less games than the other guys. 

Other Picks:
Ben Orken: Bjork is a freak athlete - works hard, can score and rebound ... he will have some 3 vote games this year.
Toma Lulgjurad: The most confusing name to spell since Purgacz ... there are "l's" in the there followed by a "gj" combination. Toma is a pounder inside, he can score and works super hard - this will get him votes.

Dark Horse:
Phil Walker - Phil is a banger - will get boards he shouldn't, is one the leaders, can finish inside. Wouldn't be surprised to see him sneak in and get votes on a consistent basis.

G's
Palk's Pick - Dillon Haydon
If Tim is my lock then Dillon is my 1a lock. Dillon is the team's best player, leads the team in scoring and at times the only one who was not overawed. This is an easy one.

Other Picks:
Reid Amos - Reid plays way bigger than his small frame - he can get inside in offense and works hard in D - he will be there abouts. Played too few games though.
James Townsend - Jimmy was the best shooter in the team and will get some votes.

Dark Horse:
Will Harmer - Charmer played the 2nd most games - was the team's center and best rebounder ... he will get some votes. Wouldn't be surprised if he finished 2nd.

*3 of my Dark Horse picks are Asian ... that's not racist is it? Is me pointing it out racist? 2 of the guys who are Dark Horse picks are married to Asian girls ... come on Palky time to have a long hard look at yourself mate.  

  

SACBA Week 15 Results

Players' Player Night is this Saturday night - August 30. It is at the Seven Stars Hotel - in the beer garden. We have had 39 RSVPs (and 8 guests) - so I will book for 50. There are 10 guys despite my best efforts that have yet to RSVP ... you know who you are!

You can get there from 6 - 6.30 - you can order food then. The count will be starting at 7pm sharp.

I will be doing my Players' Player Preview later in the week but in short my 7 picks are - Jack, Gus, Goody, Stu, Bubs, Tim and Dillon.

Also - pencil in the dates for the next 2 functions - Club Lunch on Saturday October 11 and Microbrewry Bus Tour to McLaren Vale on Saturday November 22.

The Final Schedule should be being released this week - please note - games could be at night (from 6pm - 10pm) so please don't book anything (like a trip overseas). Finals are September 6, 13 and 20.

Before we get the reports - Liam noted there may have been an incident during the final game of the day on Saturday - he has written the following:

It has been great to have all our teams at the one stadium together again this year and the additional support that we have given each other has been excellent. But on Saturday, for the first time that I am aware this year, we received a complaint about the behaviour of some of our supporters. It is particularly concerning that the behaviour happened with children present. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by this club.

Many club members have been bringing their own children to games this year and personally I like the family atmosphere. I would be upset if other teams were inappropriate around my daughter and as such I think we need to change our behaviour to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

In response, I would firstly like to ask that senior club members display off-court leadership as well as on court to keep us all in line, but we are all adults and we should hold ourselves to the highest standards on and off the court. On court we have been pretty good this year but can always strive to do better, off court we should place more attention on supporting our team strongly, while not commenting on the opposition or the refs. We’ll have more of a discussion about this at training Tuesday and if you have any questions please see me, Palky or G and we’ll be happy to tell you how it will be for the rest of the year and into the future.

This is Palky again ... I agree with everything Liam has said ... even if I am not there imagine I am there and then think "would Palky yell at me if I did this" ... if the answer is yes, don't do it.

To the reports:
A's (14-1) v Gateway A (10-5) - NO REPORT (can usually reply on a Gateway report but they had little say about the 4th installment this year). This will be the lost Gateway v Old Reds contest where teh Reds won 51-36 and where Jack scored 23, Phil 12, Orks 8.

B's (7-8) v SPOC B (11-4) - NO REPORT. The B's battled but fell short against an almost full strength Saints. Loss 29-31 - Gus 14, Jono 7, Lachie 6.

*The win against Gateway and the loss against Saints pretty much means the A's are playing Saints to get into the GF and the B's are playing Gateway in an Elimination Final.

C's (13-2) v SPOC B (5-10) - Written by G - This week we were up against SPOC Bs. Last time we play we weren’t great and only won by 4. This time, leading up to finals, we wanted to show ourselves how we could play. Scoring was slow early on, with us getting up 6-5 after about 10 mins. Our defence was strong, not allowing them any SPOCTM offensive rebounds and 2nd chance shots. We were getting some good looks and getting to the line quite a lot but 4/12 for the half left us with an unflattering lead of 10-5 at half time. In the 2nd half our offense flowed much better, getting many open looks and some passes to Goody that looked like shots. We were able to get to the line again in the 2nd half this time going 9/12. The star of the show however was our defence. Again they only scored 5 for the half, with the Cs not allowing any easy baskets, SPOC went an uncharacteristic 2/12 from the line. It was a great show of team defence to keep SPOC to 10 points for a whole game. Hendo, G and Jay had 8, Goody had 7, and BB and a MASSIVE offensive rebound in the 2nd half. A great team win.

D's (11-4) v Unley Park A (10-5) - Written by Sime - The D’s knew the double chance was on the line in the matchup against Unley Park.  But with 2 victories against them this year, the Reds were confident they could take home the chocolates.  Expecting Unley to get a quick start, it was the Reds who jumped out the blocks, energetic in getting out to the shots to limit UP’s scoring opportunities.  Unfortunately some were a little too energetic, with Reggie picking up 3 cheap fouls in 5 minutes of play.  The Reds were getting good looks, with Palky dropping 3 sweet treys for the half, Stu driving and reaping the benefits at the bucket or the stripe, the Road Train and Josh finding some nice space inside the key and Brendon being the ‘everywhere man’ inside and outside the key and under the basket.  In what Palk described as ‘vintage’, Reggie hit the passing lane for a steal and layup and the Reds gave Unley a dose of intensity for the last few minutes of the half, forcing turnovers and converting shots = including a nice finish by Frangers with only a few seconds to go - pushing out to a 28-19 lead at half time (Palk 9, Stu 8, Frangars 6).  Again we started off the half well, further stretching the lead on the back of buckets by Kobe, Frangars and 3’s to Reggie.  But UP started to eat away at our 15+ point lead, their #32 hard to stop on the drive and although we were taking the same good shots from the 1st half, they weren’t dropping.  With 3 minutes to go we were only up by 3 until Unley scored.  Stu drew a foul and hit 1 of 2 to give us a 2 point buffer, and with some strong D, we repelled UP and Kool Kalm Kobe klosed out the game with a nice finish for a 4 point win.  Hats off for the strong rebounding effort against a couple of springy opposition, particularly Road Train who did a great job on the O-boards and keeping them alive.   Final score 45-41, Frangars 12, Palky & Stu 9.  (Foul shooting wasn’t our best at 5/14 – but we still want to finish 2nd in the club!) Thanks to JT for another great effort on the scoresheet, and for being wise enough to hide his bag of tortilla chips before we got out to the carpark and they disappeared. Thanks also to everyone who brought beers (3 eskies in all) & hung around after the game, was a great club atmosphere and augurs well for support for the finals and our last couple of club events.

This win puts the C's and D's 1st and 2nd. The C's are guaranteed top and unless the D's lose to Taperoo they will finish 2nd.

E's (12-3) v F's (8-6) - Written by Lenny - The F's came out determined to keep on building respect and show that they had the capacity to mix it. The first half went shot for shot; the F's were strong in a man defence and were getting some good looks at the other end. As the half wore on and the F's match-ups got a bit ragged, B-rad & Cam stepped up for some easier buckets to bring the E's back into the game. The scores broke 17 - 16 at half time (F's up by 1).  The second half showed that the F's still need to put together a full 40 minutes of basketball. The game demonstrated what the F's can do when they come to play and they just need to put it together more consistently. The E's went on a 12 - 0 run and the game was out to 28 - 17; that 5 minutes was the death knell of the F's and the rest of the half broke 9 - 3. Final score 37 - 20 - Bjork was huge on the boards at both ends but the second half the putbacks just didn't drop. Tim 11 after a great first half; Bjork - 4; Trimmy hitting a vintage 2. For the E's Bubs had 15, Brad 11 and Cam 4. Thanks to G for taking the scoring responsibilities for both teams.

G's (4-1-9) v SPOC D (5-1-8) - With no chance of making finals and a bye next week, G-Force’s season came to a close this week the same way it began, with a match-up against St Peters ‘D’.  This required the special extended version of the scoresheet to fit in names like Freddie Fruit-Tingle, Richard Pine-Coffin, Rusty Pye-Carte, and Reginald Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax*. Pre-game we engaged in speculation over what their game plan would be, but we failed to come up with an alternative to throw up rubbish and crash the boards, and as it turned out, neither could they. This game was a close contest from the opening tip, the lead changing hands several times but never more than a basket either way. The first half closed with the Redmen in front 13-11. The second half was more of the same, and with G-Force holding a slender lead late in the game, the referees decided to get involved and blow their whistle on the Reds regularly and often, and whether or not it was warranted.  After a succession of attempts from the line, St Peters final made a free throw to tie the game with just under half a minute left. The Reds had a chance to hold the ball and take the last shot, but Captain James T Kirk had a brain-fade and jacked up a contested corner three with plenty of time left, something that earned him a stern rebuke post-game from a veteran player**. Saints grabbed the rebound and raced to the other end, but the refs weren’t done, calling their point guard for a fend-off as he whirled to the basket.  The Reds called a time-out with 0.2 seconds left, barely enough time to inbound but not enough get off a shot.  Final score 25-all – remarkably, the three games between us and SPOC D this season were a one-point loss, a one-point win, and a tie. Reid top scored with 11 and James supported him with 9.  Thanks to Palky for scoring.

SACBA Week 14 Results

MILESTONE: With a late 3, "Captain" Jack Harford scored his 19th point on Saturday and his 1000th point for the Old Reds Basketball Club. To put it simply, Jack is pretty good at basketball - he is incredibly skilled, deceivingly athletic (although I doubt his ability to dunk), a great ball-handler* and shooter - but above all an unselfish teammate and leader. Jack joined in 2008, I highlighted in the 2008 C Train blog I wrote earlier in the year, that he started with the C's due to injury and lead them to an amazing season. He joined the A's in 2009 and has won a title with them every year ... think about that ... 6 years - 5 in the A's ... and 6 titles. He was awarded Club Champion in 2011, A's MVP in 2011 and 2013, A's Best Team Man in 2012 and Rookie of the Year in 2008 (with Orks). He is the only player to win 4 Players' Players Awards (3 in the A's and 1 in the C's). At the 20 Year Dinner he was named one of the 12 Best Players of the 1st 20 years - he was unanimously selected (along with Big A, Blair, Wildman, Liam and Dangerous Stu) ... pretty good company. In 2 weeks, he starts his campaign to win 7 straight titles - an honour he will share with Liam if they manage to do it. Congrats mate.    

I still need Players' Player RSVPs (Seven Stars on Saturday August 30) - either Facebook, text or email. I don't mind if you tell me no ... I just need you to tell me. If I have to message you again my text will have annoyed undertones. I have had 42 replies out of 61 so that is not bad but I need more - I am looking at you the E's of all teams (only 2 RSVPs so far) ... and Ned! 

Before we start the reports - I just want to note how important it is to rock up 15-20 minutes before the games ... something that we do but just want to highlight the importance. It is little things like this that help set us apart. We all catch up before the game, create a relaxed atmosphere, talk about things that we need to do in the game, warm up together, the Captain can get the tickets, fill in the scoresheet etc. All these things really help. We saw on Saturday with Saints A's and B's that they were still getting their sh*t together when they stepped on the court - their focus wasn't on the game - and we jumped them. We got out to massive leads in both games and then by the time they are ready to start playing the game is over.

To the reports:
A's v SPOC A - An important game in the make up of the rest of the season for the A's - Saints were missing McMichael and Kong but had Hautop back. As I said above, the A's absolutely jumped Saints - they couldn't handle the extended pressure and were down 11-2 after 3 minutes and had to call an early timeout. Didn't help - the A's kept the pressure up and Jack, Phil, Liam and Foo were all getting steals, scoring on the break or getting fouled and making their free throws - they were playing super unselfish and Phil made a couple of great passes. Unbelievably the A's were up 28-4 at half time. The 2nd half was a closer contest - with the pressure off Will Good started scoring (a very Will Good thing to do) and Bobo was making his mid range j. The game became free flowing with 3 Reds scoring 10+ in the 2nd half - Phil was, as he has done all year, scoring in bunches, Orks was unstoppable inside and Jack was getting out on the break (and was accused of being hungry) and hit the late 3 to bring up his 1000th point. Reds won 70-38 as Josh "Hawk" Orken scored on a late layup. Jack 19, Phil and Hawk 18. It was great to see Tauny back.

*Bill and I were arguing (as we always do) about all things Reds and Saints. He was putting forward the argument that we were not the best team this year and our A's aren't the best team ever (over the last 20 years). I put forward the argument - that they have made the Grand Final over the last 9 years, won the last 6 and the 3 Intercol trophies look really great in my house. When then turned to Orken when he made a great move in the post for the lefty finish - Palk stated he was the best player in the league - to which the retort was "he is just tall". There is no winning with some people.  

B's v Oakden A - Short Report - B's came out hard - with Jono, Mike and Crawf all scoring freely. The B's were working harder than Oakden and went in up 21-7 at half time (aided then by an additional 6 points for no scorer and late player). 2nd half was awful - Reds only scored 7 points but held Oakden to 14. B's went 0/9 from them line in the 2nd half ... pathetic. Win 34-21. Jono 11, Crawf 6, Mike 5. 

C's v Taperoo A - NO REPORT. Win 34-24. G 18, Madman 10.

D's v SPOC B - A danger game for the D's - the only other team to beat the D's this year other than the C's. SPOC B's were missing the 2 players that caused the D's trouble in their first meeting and they had to fill in with 2 of their D's players. The D's defense in the first half was good - jumping out on all 3 point shooters and keeping Saints off the glass. Ned and Frangers did the bulk of the scoring in the 1st half - getting to the hoops and Ned hit a tough 3. Reds up 14-3 at halftime. The 2nd half became more free flowing - Saints started to hit jumpers that they were missing in the 1st half but they couldn't stop the Reds scoring - Palky finally found some shooting form and hit three 3's, Frangers and Kobe were getting inside and scoring and Stu was getting to the line and converting. A solid performance without being spectacular (said the girlfriends and wives of the Old Reds). Win 43-27. Frangers had 11, Ned and Palk 9.   

E's v Saint Peters A - Forfeit Win ... again!

F's vs Spicer A - Written by Lenny - Today the F's turned up to play. They played as a team; they won as a team. In contrast to the previous few weeks where all sorts of distractions got in the way, the F's took their lessons from a good session on the training track into Saturday. Playing man, the F's got on the board with Hanzo & Lenny making some 12 footers & Toma going strong inside Pretty quickly, we were with a 10 - 2 advantage but their #12 (young Hamish) was causing some problems with some accurate shooting. Tim and Bjork came off the bench and had immediate impact with Tim hitting a couple of 3's for the half and Bjork hoovering up the boards at both ends of the court. Went into the half 30 - 18 up with Tim on 10, Toma 8, Bjork 6 and Hanzo 4   The second half was more of an arm wrestle - they were sent to the line a bit but to the F's credit they did not question an ump's call all game and stayed totally focussed upon the basketball and the ring It split 19 - 14 (21 - 14 on our score sheet - thanks Sarah??); Bjork went ballistic inside and Tim got some nice lay-ins on transition and Toma and Hanzo kept mopping up Final official score 49 - 32 with a good even spread of scoring - the F's proved that they could play a good brand of team basketball and will keep on coming; Bjork 15 points - no fouls; Tim 14; Toma - 12; Hanzo 8. And thanks to Sarah for scoring.

G's v SPOC E - Written by Hitman - After three weeks of unspeakable basketball, G-Force return to the Old Reds’ blog with yet another game against the Auld Enemy, this time the E-type, the better of the two SPOC teams in the ‘E’ Grade.  In fact they went into the game at the top of the ladder, while SPOC ‘D’ languish at the other end of the standings.  The game plan for SPOC was as expected, and in the first half they scored mainly on the break, with a couple of lucky tip-ins virtually their only scores in the half-court.  At the other end G-Force were moving the ball well and getting good looks, but as usual the shots refused to drop.  At the half the Redmen trailled 13-4 with only a single made basket on the scoresheet.  The second half began with quick scores from both teams but it was the Redmen who maintained the momentum, continuing to close the gap throughout the half, and making the shots they were missing in the first half.  In fact it was SPOC who called the first time-out to regroup, but it did little to slow the rampaging Redmen, particularly Charlie who continued to run the break throughout the game.  Unfortunately SPOC were able to sneak a bucket here and there and this was just enough to stop G-Force catching them, the final scoreboard showing 21-20 (adjusted to 23-20 post-game for No Scorer), a 16-8 second-half advantage.  A fantastic effort considering we were undermanned and facing the league leader.  Charlie Baker lead the scoring with 8 and Dillon added 6. 

Lady Reds v Adelaide A - The Lady Reds were once again up against Adelaide. Missing Jordy, Claire, Megan and Emma - they welcomed back Loz and Clare (another Clare ... different spelling) filled in. The Reds started in a 3-2 to try something different before heading into Finals. The D worked well and they were able to cause some problems with Adelaide - but without a couple of their main scorers, Reds struggled to get baskets. Alicia hit a couple of jumpers and Clare scored. Reds down 7-14 at halftime. The 2nd half - #34 for Adelaide (the best player in the league) got away a bit and was able to get inside for basket after basket. The Reds stayed close with Clare, Loz and Alicia all hitting 3's. Wans and Georgie battled hard inside but they were exhausted by the end ... Wans made 2 of 2 from the line. The Lady Reds lost by 12 - 23-35 ... but they showed signs and if they can keep Adelaide in that 30-35 range come Finals they might have a chance at beating them. Alicia had 7 and Clare 6.

Week 15 Previews:
Some massive games this week - probably the biggest week of the season with the A's, D's and E's/F's result having major ramifications for the final make up of the ladder:

A's v Gateway A - a win against Gateway would pretty much mean they play Saints in the 1st week of finals. This is the most important game of the season for the A's.

B's v SPOC A - of course, if the B's win (which they could well do) the A's will play Gateway even if they beat them. Does that make sense?

C's v SPOC B - if the C's win it pretty much knocks Saints B's out of the finals

D's v Unley Park A - playing for 2nd spot. A win would mean they are 2nd ... a loss means they are 3rd.

E's v F's - the F's need the win ... a loss will push them equal to Golden Grove.

G's v SPOC D - this is the last week for the G's. Some results didn't go their way but they battled and that is all we can ask. They have finals off to enjoy watching some games and having some drinks.

Lady Reds v St Casmir A - need to win the last 2 games to ensure they make the Top 4.
