2016 SACBA Week 17 Results
The Players’ Player Awards Night is on – Saturday 27th August @ The Seven Stars. It is the night of our last minor round game. This is the night where we award each Saturday Team’s Best Player according to his teammates – by tallying all the votes that have been meticulously kept throughout the season. It is like the Brownlow … but 8 of them all on the one night. We can arrive from 6.30pm (earlier if you want a cheeky drinks before the count) – the count will start at 7.00pm. The count should wrap up around 10.00pm. You can order meals from 6.30pm. Food and drinks are pay as you go. You need to let me know ASAP - just write in the comment section (likes will not be attributed as attending ... just an indication that you like said event)– so please respond because there’s a lot to be organised and the less time I have to spend chasing people the better – in your response let me know if you plan on having a meal (I need to let the venue know). You can bring as many guests as you like – everyone welcome – partners, friends, family etc. We will have the Betting Boards again. Always a great night – beer, food, vote counting, basketball chat and possibly Intercol games.
To the reports:
A's v Gateway A - Written by Jack - Gateway decided not to bring out any players over 5'11 and we genuinely did whatever we liked. Scored 90odd points without getting out of first gear. They played ok and shot heaps of threes, but the 38pt margin did not reflect how much of a blow out this actually was. Thanks to Lenny for scoring. Win 87-49 - Orks 24-, Phil and Foo 19
B's v SPOC B - Written by Brendon - The B's played against the old enemy Saints at Saints, starting off in the usual 2-3 zone due to low numbers. The B's were feeding Phil inside whilst Tim & Brendon were getting out on the break. For Saints Yeo & Gibbons were penetrating, Halftime B's 23-28 Saints. The second half didn't start off well for the B's, with missed shots & turnovers occurring regularly which lead to fast breaks & easy looks for Saints. Saints were more composed on the day, final score B's 34-52 Saints - Brendon 15, Phil 11. Thanks to Sean for scoring & coaching.
C's v Unley Park A - Written by Jay - Unley is last in our league and the Ds always smash them, but they always seem to give us trouble. Saturday’s game was no exception as Unley scored the first 8 points and were up double digits most of the first half, ending up leading us 22-11 at the break. They only had 5 players though, and we knew if we picked up the tempo they would start to struggle. Jamie and Ned were hustling all over the court causing turnovers, and Jamie continued his hot-second half trend, hitting three 3s and scoring 15. We started hitting our open shots and were up 8 with 2 mins to go. They were able to keep it interesting and cut it down to 3 in the final 20 seconds or so (but for some reason didn’t foul us with the ball to try and get the ball back). Ended up winning 43-40. Jamie 17, Lachy 7, Jay and Ned 6.
D's v SPOC B - Up against Saints for what felt like the 6th time this season ... that is because it was. We have won by 17, 13, 11, 12 (and lost once). They do Saints-y things and we need to try and stop them from getting the O glass and making open jumpers. The D's picked Saints apart in the first half - Stu was getting to the basket, Thommo and A were dominating low socring 12 points between them, Madman in his return game made back to back jumpers from his corner - up 26-13 at half time. Second half was a bit more free flowing - one guy from Saints hit his 3rd and 4th 3 - which Palk was having none of and made four 3's in the 2nd half. Thommo, Roughie, Foo and Madman all scored a couple of baskets and Stu did Stu things - getting to the basket and finishing with layups - because he is good at layups. D's win 65-37. Stu with 17, Thommo 13, Palk 12, Madman 8.
E's v Big Sunday A - Written by Max - After a couple of close losses we thought we were out of finals contention this year, however the competitive Central 2/3 league keeps throwing up surprises with the teams around us on the ladder also tripping over themselves. This week shaped up to be a critical game with the 4th placed ‘E’s up against the 5th placed Big Sunday team, which we had lost to on our previous two encounters. Both teams started very intensely on the defensive end limiting early scoring opportunities. Mid way through the half Road Train came alive out muscling everyone around the ring, scoring and going to the free throw line multiple times. The highlight was a ridiculous fade away jump shot from outside the key on the baseline. Kara was battling away inside as well, inspiring everyone with a back to the basket post move that he finished so strong there might as well have been steam coming out of his ears! The second half was a great team effort by the E’s with some superb passages of play that weren’t always reflected on the scoresheet. E’s ran out winners 30-19, Road Train top scored with 10 but a balanced effort with everyone getting points. Thanks to super fill in BB for providing an extra spark off the bench and Kara’s dad for coming out to score for us.

Aussie Boomers start this Saturday night. You'd be surprised how hard the schedule is to find so here is something I have put together - I am pretty sure it is correct. Aussies have to win one of their 1st 2 games if they are any chance of a medal.

A's (13-2-0) v B's (2-13) - Written by Mike - This is often a game hard to feel good about, At least one team walks away disappointed. The A's had their full 6 squad whilst B's made some phone calls to bring together a team with Tauny, Alex and Manners lending a hand to replace Phill, Self and Gussy. The game started in A's favour, again getting out on the break early and capitalising with some good inside passes, no one that could really Guard Orken in the B's line up. Luckily for them, Orken would throw down a monstrous dunk, and with safety in mind, took his time to land. This was met with a tech, and another tech for complaining about the first one. Well done officials, way to over control a friendly game. A's down to 5 players, B's caught some momentum and brought the gap to 5 points at the break 21-16. The A's regrouped, pressed and changed the pace of the game. B's struggled to break the press and capitalise on opportunities when they did. Some stand out efforts by the B's but unfortunately over shadowed by a 40+ point half by the A's. A's win 65-27. A's - Foo 19, Liam 12, Phil 11, B's Mitch 8, Brendon 7, Moops 6.
C's (12-3) v SPOC C (6-9) - Written by Jay - Keen to avenge an ugly intercol loss, we started off…slowly. Saints were getting to the basket and scoring on offensive rebounds and we were out of sync, not scoring for the first 4 or 5 mins. Eventually some good movement resulted in Jay hitting a few 3s and Ned, Jamie and Goody scored inside and we were able to hang around, down 21-17 at the half. The 2nd half was a completely different story as we started pushing the pace and picking up our defence. Lachie was driving relentlessly, scoring and dishing when Saints collapsed around him. Ned was making them pay from the line, and Alex and Jamie both were hitting shots from deep. Saints only scored 5 in the half (quite late as well), and we ended up with a nice win 37-26. Jay 9, Lachie 8, Ned 7.
D's (9-6) v Unley A (3-12) - D's win by forfeit.
E's (6-8) v Blackwood A (5-1-7) - Written by Max - It was a tale of two halves for the E’s against Blackwood on Saturday. In the first half Blackwood were happy to shoot away from behind the 3 point line but couldn’t find the net. The E’s utilized their size advantage to dominate the defensive boards. At the other end the E’s showed flashes of brilliance. This included Road Train scoring off of a give and go, as well as some nifty passing between Morgan and Road Train around the keyway. Blackwood made a couple of late 3 pointers to pull back the E’s lead to 16-10 at the half time break. In the second half Blackwood found their shot including five 3 pointers and a number of long 2 point jump shots. Blackwood were making these shots in spite of decent defense from the E’s. The scoreline pegged along fairly closely for most of the half but the E’s 2 pointers couldn’t keep pace with their outside shooting. Morgan had a blinder with 13 points in the second half. In the end Blackwood came away with the win 43-39. Morgan had 14 points, Max and Sam had 7 each. A welcome return from Kobe after missing 8 weeks with injury. Thanks to Stu for scoring for us.
F's (8-6) v Knightsbridge A (9-4) - NO REPORT. Win 36-20. G 11, JT 10, Charlie 5. Come on lads ... someone can send me 4 sentences a week.
Because there is no F's report I will do a quick look at the next 4 weeks in the Central 2/3 Grade as it is very close. Below is the ladder as it now stands and the next 4 games. Note - all the teams that have 2 byes - got an extra 2 points. The E's and Taperoo only had 1 bye. 1* in the Bye column means they have had one bye and they have another one coming up.
The Knightsbridge v Taperoo and E v F game in Week 19 are huge and will likely shape the finals. The E's have an interesting draw - they play the top and the bottom teams, as the team they are vying for 4th with - their destiny is well and truly in their own hands and they could do a favour for the E's. The F's have a decent draw home (except the bye). The team that is probably in the best position is Taperoo - if they win their remaining games - they could really help the Reds.
G's (6-9) v Golden Grove A (11-4) - NO REPORT. Loss 20-36. Reid 13, Matt 3. Player Scorer 2. See F's comment above.
Lady Reds (10-5) v CityReach A (11-4) - Lady Reds had to win on Saturday to be any chance of finishing top 2. Reds started well with Megan and Alicia hiting early 3's and Rachel and Jordy getting to the basket - Reds up 16-7 at halftime. This was almost exactly the same scoreline last time we played CityReach - and then they scored 32 in a half. And once again CityReach came out hot - hitting jumpers that they were missing in the 2st half, scoring inside. The Reds kept the scoreboard ticking over - Jordy had a nice couple of jumpers inside, Tracey scored on the break, Rachel hit Hannah inside - when Megan hit a big 3 the score got back out to 6 and the Lady Reds were able to hold them off. Big win 31-27. Rachel and Jordy 8 and Megan 6. This was a big win for the team - 1. to prove that they can beat these girls and 2. it puts them 1 game behind. The Reds will need to beat Unley in 3 weeks if they are any chance of finishing top 2. Big month ahead.
Palky's Player of the Week - Week 15 - Tough one this week. I'm going to give it to G - his 2nd half 11 points against Knightsbridge held them off in an important win.

2016 SACBA Week 14 Results + Intercol
MILESTONES: On Saturday - Liam Golding and Nathan Graham will both play their 400th game this week.
Liam joined the club in 1999 (the year we first started stats). He played his 1st year in the B's and has then spent the next 16 years in the A's (he missed the 2003 season when he was overseas. Liam has done all you can do in the club - he is a 2 time Club Champion (2004 and 2011), A's MVP in 2005, won multiple Best Team Man, 1st winner of the Sean Heylen Medal for best player in the 2007 Intercol, Life Member in 2009 and was voted in unanimously to the Team of the 20 Years in 2013.
Get this - Liam has won 9 ... 9 A Grade titles - along with Big A as the only player to win that many.
He is the 7th player to play 400 games, is the 3rd all time leading scorer, 5th in Free Throws attempt and 3rd in makes and 4th in 3's.
One would argue (namely I would argue) that Liam has the best career in an Old Reds uniform. He does what ever the team needs him to do - he has lead the A's in scoring, he has lead them in 3's, he is their best defender, he plays down low or guard, you can run the offence through him - of his 400 games ... he would not have lost many.
G won his only Saturday Championship in 2013 in the C's - scoring 17 in the Grand Final with opposition playing box and 1 on him - one of the great games in club history.
There is no one club history that can get hot like G.
Last week, Mark Powell played his 300th game - the 10th player to reach this milestone.
INTERCOL: On Monday night we had Intercol - this year at Saints. We came away with wins in the A's and B's but unfortunately the C's lost.

To the reports:
A's (12-2-0) v Gateway A (8-2-4) - Written by Mike - Gateway showed an almost full line up, rocking up with 9 players, only short Kerwin and a James smith that didn't play. The A's missing Liam and a withdrawn from the team Corey, played yet another game with only 5. They've never looked shorter, with Jack and Mike making up the 3 and 4 man spot. It was a game of inconsistencies. Less than average passing, less than average finishing, less than average refereeing. Gateway stayed in the game early with a few good shots from range and a few considerable referee calls that put them to the line when it shouldn't have, and kept A's off the line when they should. Playing with 5 as opposed to 9, every misplaced foul call tended to mean that much more. A's up at the half but only by 6 or so. The second half was very much of the same, A's seemed a lot more flat that usual and really struggled to gain momentum, only scoring on the break. A few more dubious calls going both ways had all the players uniting in confusion as to the deplorable efforts of the officials, UIC standing nearby unable to lend an opinion with the stance "if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say it." A's were down 4 with 50 seconds to go, got a quick lay up, followed by another interesting 3 seconds in the key call to get the back. 20 on the clock 2 down. Moved the ball to Jack who drew a foul and made both shots, time out to Gateway 5 on the clock. Gateway choked and ran each other as A's managed a turnover and a quick timeout. 3 on the clock and an inbound. Without a whiteboard the play was run amiss and the ball knocked wayward, draw at the end of an interesting game. Big thanks to Lachy to stick around and score.Draw 37-37. Foo 11, Jack 10, Phil 9.
Looks like the game almost reached "BOILING POINT"
B's v SPOC A - Quick report - the B;s started super strong and were up 21-12 at halftime - Jono made 8 straight free throws. Second half - Reds ran out of legs and started arguing with the refs. Saints put on the pressure and pulled away. Lost 28-45. Jono 11, Brendon 10, Mitch 5.
C's (11-3) v Unley A (3-11) - NO REPORT - Down in the 2nd half by 8 they came back to win 44-36. Jay 11, Ned and Goody 9.
D's (8-6) v SPOC B (6-8) - The D's came out on fire - the score was 25-0! Stu hit 4 straight 3's - the interior passing was amazing, Big A scored 11 points in the half, including an amazing tip in, Foo and Stu got out on the break, Purge was hitting every open player - it might have been the best half in the Old Reds history. Half time was 36-6. The 2nd half was the exact opposite - the D's ran out of legs (which is understandable considering their age) and Saints started to make shots that they were missing in the 1st half - Saints out scored the Reds 27-11 in the 2nd but the lead was too much to overcome. D's win 47-33. Stu 18, A 11, Thommo 7.
E's (6-7) v Taperoo A (8-1-4) - Written by Max - So I thought Taperoo had cleaned up their act a little bit, I was wrong:
1. First possession of the game, I’m on the left side of the court near the low post, shot rebounds long to the right hand side, I get a shove from behind and go flying out of court, turn around to remonstrate and their biggest player gets in my face and screams ‘I’ll do more than push you’.
2. Taperoo switched to a half court man early in the first half. I think the extra intensity and physicality surprised us.
3. Taperoo racked up 8 fouls in the first 6 minutes of the second half, they must have fouled us on every possession. Total of 35 fouls for the game slows everything down so much.
4. We shot 5/16 from the line. We couldn’t make Taperoo pay for their strategy to foul us constantly.
5. Refs pet call for the day was travelling, whistling Morgan 4 times for it. I think they got confused because he is left handed.
6. Our defence looked good – we only let them score 19 points! Both of their made 3 pointers were rubbish shots too.
7. We got some quality looks at the basket that just rolled in and out. Even when there was no foul called there was usually still contact. Miller and Tye, our scoring threats from recent weeks, looked out of sorts – I’m sure their form will be back next week.

Lady Reds v St Casmir A - Jordy returned to the team that has been hit with another injury. The 1st half was a grind - the Reds were scoring with Rachel and Alicia on the break and Hannah inside, the team was getting good looks but just not making their open jumpers. St Casmir were knocking down their jumpers and were allowed to get out on the break. Alciai hit 2 late 3's by Alicia kept the Reds in it - 17-17 at half time. The 2nd half the Reds were getting out on the break - Tracey and Rach this time, Megan made a couple of runners and a jumper, Jordy scored inside and the D tightened up. Reds won 42-32. Alicia 10, Rachel 9, Tracey 8.

Liam joined the club in 1999 (the year we first started stats). He played his 1st year in the B's and has then spent the next 16 years in the A's (he missed the 2003 season when he was overseas. Liam has done all you can do in the club - he is a 2 time Club Champion (2004 and 2011), A's MVP in 2005, won multiple Best Team Man, 1st winner of the Sean Heylen Medal for best player in the 2007 Intercol, Life Member in 2009 and was voted in unanimously to the Team of the 20 Years in 2013.
Get this - Liam has won 9 ... 9 A Grade titles - along with Big A as the only player to win that many.
He is the 7th player to play 400 games, is the 3rd all time leading scorer, 5th in Free Throws attempt and 3rd in makes and 4th in 3's.
One would argue (namely I would argue) that Liam has the best career in an Old Reds uniform. He does what ever the team needs him to do - he has lead the A's in scoring, he has lead them in 3's, he is their best defender, he plays down low or guard, you can run the offence through him - of his 400 games ... he would not have lost many.
Nathan joined the club in 2003 (missing the 2008 season) - if there is a statistcal record G probably holds it. G has been a member of most teams in the club - he started in the B's, moved to the A's from 2004-2006, then split time between the B's and C's - almost always leading his team in scoring. G won the Club Champion in 2013, is a 5 time team MVP, 3 time C Grade Players' Player Winner, 3 time of the Lowbrown (the Wednesday team Players' Player) and was a Life Member in 2013.
He is 6th in games played, 2nd in scoring (soon to be 1st), 5th best points per game average (behind Blair, Dan Garrett, James Jones adn Phil Harford) and 2nd in 3's made.G won his only Saturday Championship in 2013 in the C's - scoring 17 in the Grand Final with opposition playing box and 1 on him - one of the great games in club history.
There is no one club history that can get hot like G.
Last week, Mark Powell played his 300th game - the 10th player to reach this milestone.
Max joined the club in 2002 - playing a couple of years in the C's then into the B's. In 2006 he moved interstate and returned in 2011 – where he has been playing with C’s and E’s as well as playing and running the Thursday team. He has won 3 Saturday titles – C’s in 2002, B’s in 2004 and E’s in 2014. In the C’s in 2002 – down 1, Max was fouled – there was no time left on the clock and he had 2 free throws. In one of the best 5 moments in club history – Max made both free throws. Max is also a 5 time team MVP.
One of the great scorers in the club – he is 6th all-time in points scored, 4th all-time in 200+ points in a season (7 times) and 6th in 3’s made.
INTERCOL: On Monday night we had Intercol - this year at Saints. We came away with wins in the A's and B's but unfortunately the C's lost.
Below are the scoresheets - pretty much explain everything. The C's started too slow and got down early - they had a good comeback and were down 3 with 2 seconds left - they didn't get a good look and lost. The B's crushed Saints - starting 24-1 (Saints B's obviously don't start well). Jono, Brendon and Lachy crushed it. The A's had a great start - Jack was on fire. The A's got out to a nice lead but Saints came back as they have a tendency to do. The A's got to the line a bit and made some crucial free throws ... not a great 2nd half but got the job done.
With the 2 wins - PAOC have now won a total of 35 Intercols and Saints have won 34. It has taken 24 years - but we now have more wins than them. It is very satisfying ... like watching tennis balls get made.

A's (12-2-0) v Gateway A (8-2-4) - Written by Mike - Gateway showed an almost full line up, rocking up with 9 players, only short Kerwin and a James smith that didn't play. The A's missing Liam and a withdrawn from the team Corey, played yet another game with only 5. They've never looked shorter, with Jack and Mike making up the 3 and 4 man spot. It was a game of inconsistencies. Less than average passing, less than average finishing, less than average refereeing. Gateway stayed in the game early with a few good shots from range and a few considerable referee calls that put them to the line when it shouldn't have, and kept A's off the line when they should. Playing with 5 as opposed to 9, every misplaced foul call tended to mean that much more. A's up at the half but only by 6 or so. The second half was very much of the same, A's seemed a lot more flat that usual and really struggled to gain momentum, only scoring on the break. A few more dubious calls going both ways had all the players uniting in confusion as to the deplorable efforts of the officials, UIC standing nearby unable to lend an opinion with the stance "if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say it." A's were down 4 with 50 seconds to go, got a quick lay up, followed by another interesting 3 seconds in the key call to get the back. 20 on the clock 2 down. Moved the ball to Jack who drew a foul and made both shots, time out to Gateway 5 on the clock. Gateway choked and ran each other as A's managed a turnover and a quick timeout. 3 on the clock and an inbound. Without a whiteboard the play was run amiss and the ball knocked wayward, draw at the end of an interesting game. Big thanks to Lachy to stick around and score.Draw 37-37. Foo 11, Jack 10, Phil 9.
Looks like the game almost reached "BOILING POINT"
B's v SPOC A - Quick report - the B;s started super strong and were up 21-12 at halftime - Jono made 8 straight free throws. Second half - Reds ran out of legs and started arguing with the refs. Saints put on the pressure and pulled away. Lost 28-45. Jono 11, Brendon 10, Mitch 5.
C's (11-3) v Unley A (3-11) - NO REPORT - Down in the 2nd half by 8 they came back to win 44-36. Jay 11, Ned and Goody 9.
D's (8-6) v SPOC B (6-8) - The D's came out on fire - the score was 25-0! Stu hit 4 straight 3's - the interior passing was amazing, Big A scored 11 points in the half, including an amazing tip in, Foo and Stu got out on the break, Purge was hitting every open player - it might have been the best half in the Old Reds history. Half time was 36-6. The 2nd half was the exact opposite - the D's ran out of legs (which is understandable considering their age) and Saints started to make shots that they were missing in the 1st half - Saints out scored the Reds 27-11 in the 2nd but the lead was too much to overcome. D's win 47-33. Stu 18, A 11, Thommo 7.
E's (6-7) v Taperoo A (8-1-4) - Written by Max - So I thought Taperoo had cleaned up their act a little bit, I was wrong:
1. First possession of the game, I’m on the left side of the court near the low post, shot rebounds long to the right hand side, I get a shove from behind and go flying out of court, turn around to remonstrate and their biggest player gets in my face and screams ‘I’ll do more than push you’.
2. Taperoo switched to a half court man early in the first half. I think the extra intensity and physicality surprised us.
3. Taperoo racked up 8 fouls in the first 6 minutes of the second half, they must have fouled us on every possession. Total of 35 fouls for the game slows everything down so much.
4. We shot 5/16 from the line. We couldn’t make Taperoo pay for their strategy to foul us constantly.
5. Refs pet call for the day was travelling, whistling Morgan 4 times for it. I think they got confused because he is left handed.
6. Our defence looked good – we only let them score 19 points! Both of their made 3 pointers were rubbish shots too.
7. We got some quality looks at the basket that just rolled in and out. Even when there was no foul called there was usually still contact. Miller and Tye, our scoring threats from recent weeks, looked out of sorts – I’m sure their form will be back next week.

2016 SACBA Week 13 Results

A's v SPOC A - Written by Mick - Bill looked like a right idiot, both in dress code and backing the wrong team. A's yet again running with 5, but when you're this good you don't need spares. A's were at their best when they were loud, picking up their tempo and rattling the boys in blue. Saints were at their best before the tip off, as Reds hadn't had an opportunity to score. More digs into boys in blue, let's make sure we beat them at Intercol in 2 weeks. Win 51-38. Foo 20, Phil and Liam 10
B's v Gateway A - Written by Jono - Saturday the B's faced Gateway, coming off of a high still from beating them in the previous match up our spirits were high and we came out strong, with Jon, Mitch and Tauny hitting 3's in the first couple of minutes, it put us to an early lead which we kept for the half, we were moving the ball well and our defensive was pretty good. Gateway were also shooting well which kept them close with the scores 26-24 at the half. Our zone defence was starting to slip and at one point Gateway were up but 15, we had a time out with 4 minutes to go, screwed our heads back on and came out into a man defence which worked well allowing us to bring the game back to 6 points with constant aggressive attacks to the basket from Jon, Brendan and Dillon! But unfortunately time ran out before we could regain the lead. Struggling with numbers this week meant we had to play a little more conservatively which didn't help in the result. Having Tauny out was a huge benefit for the B's, providing another strong body inside allowing us to cut off and get some good looks, hopefully we will have him out a few more times this season. Final score 52-44, Jon 18, Brendan 9, Tauny & Dillon 6.
C's v D's - C's were minus Jay, D's were minus Stu, Thommo, Rough, Future and Madman - they recruited in Road Train and Moorfoot. The C's started well with Jamie scoring 5 early points and Lachie and Goody scoring inside up 9-0. The D's settled with a three from Purge and Palk - with 2 late FTs from Big A for the D's, the C's went into halftime up 13-8. The 2nd half was still a grind - Lachie was tough to stop going to the basket and kept the score ticking over for the C's - Road Train scored a couple of baskets inside and Moorfoot got a couple of layups for the D's, when Palk hit a 3 it was 20-20. The C's then switched to zone and for some reason it threw the D's into a spin ... it freed up the C's and they started to score (just like Palky told them it would). Jamie hit a 3 and the drive and dump between Lachie, Krantz and Goody was too much for the D's down low. Purge got ejected late for shoving Manners - it all happened in slow-mo. C's won 35-23. C's - Lachie 15, Jamie 8, Goody 6. D's - Palk and Purge 6, Road Train 5. Thanks heaps to Sean and Mick for scoring.
E’s vs St Pauls A - Written by Max - With a late withdrawal due to sickness we were down to 5 players including one who had just filled in for the D’s. Morgan started off well catching the ball in the high post on multiple occasions and finding his way to the basket for a shot or clever dump off to the waiting Road Train. However the E’s let themselves down by failing to get back quickly enough in defense allowing the opposition to create easy transition buckets out of nothing. With Max the only guard on the team and hampered with a dodgy calf, the wings were playing out of position - and it showed. Highlight of the half was a three pointer by Road Train. In the second half the E’s kept pace with St Paul’s until about the 10 minute mark. Morgan and Road Train continued to keep the score board ticking over. Max knocked down a 3 pointer from the top. Coming out of a timeout with about 10 mins to go the E’s coughed up the ball on consecutive possessions giving St Pauls easy layups and the momentum. The E’s just ran out of steam, Morgan hitting the backboard first on 4 consecutive free throws and Road Train inbounding to the opposition. A frustrating loss going down 45-35, Road Train with 14 and Morgan with 13. Thanks to James for scoring for us.
F's v Northgate A - Win by forfeit
G's v St Peters A - NO REPORT. Lost 18-29. Reid 7, Matt 6, Troy 3.
Lady Reds v Unley A - The Lady Reds need to start beating the top teams - they had a good first half against Unley - they were up 16-12 at half time with Karen, Hannah and Alicia doing the damage offensively and the teams 3-2 D working well to stop the Unley offence. In the 2nd half - the game started to get away from the Reds who were tiring due to no bench. One Unley player started to get off and scored 12 in the half and the Reds went away from what got them the lead. The Reds didn't play great and need to improve a couple of things to be considered a shot at defending their title. Lost 25-35. Karen 10, Alicia 9, Hannah 4.
Palky's Player of the Week - Week 13 - J. Foo continues to have a great season, and Jono keeps getting numbers - this week's Player of the Week put in a Herculean effort - played 40 minutes against the C's getting 5 crucial points in the 2nd half and playing tough D, drove to Mars, played another 40 minutes top scoring with 14 (the most he has scored in a game since 2012) ... Jon "Road Train" Read.

2016 SACBA Week 12 Results
Quick note - Brendon set his club high points in a game last night with 29. Good work Brendon.
To the reports:
A's (11-1-0) v B's - Written by Mick - The A's came out after a strong win last week like they have every other week, hitting shots early and getting to the basket. A quick time out by the B's (having learned from previous weeks or from other teams) changed the pace of the game, as they beat the trap and started Getting to the hole, lead by Brendon. A's looked shaken. They've always crashed the boards well... Not today. They've generally moved the ball well... Not today... They've limited their turnovers. Not today. Credit to the B's, they changed things up, they moved the ball well, they wanted it more... For most of the game that is. Unfortunately for the B's the fairy tale ended when they got within 4 points of the A's. The A's started talking, got momentum and in 3 minutes of hustle, the game was over. 15 point lead to the A's and that was all she wrote. Great game overall. Well fought. A's win 47-34. A's - Liam 15, Orks and Foo 13 - B's - Brendon 12, Dillon and Mitch 6.
C's (9-3) v SPOC B (5-7) - Written by Jay - We were keen to impose ourselves on the game from the tip, and Lachy was hot to start, driving and getting to the hoop early and often. Krantz was doing work inside finishing off nicely after some good feeds. Jay hit a couple of 3s and Alex as well, and Reds were up 25-15 at the half. Saints started off the 2nd half strong, and scored 8 straight to cut the lead down, feeling quite chipper about themselves after knocking off the D's last week. However after a timeout, Reds picked up the intensity and it was game over as we went on a 16-2 run. Manners was all over the court forcing turnovers, running the break, and nastily swatting shots LeBron-vs-Curry style. Jay hit another 3, and Lachy and Krantz were continuing to score inside, recipients of some lovely dishes from Goody. Final 49-28. Lachy 14, Krantz 13 and Jay 13.
D's (7-5) v Unley A (3-8) - D's were missing Roughie and Big A* - Unley** were down their 2 good guards. D's started well with Palk hitting four 3's , Stu hit 2 and Fooey hit 1 ... Palky then hit 2 more to wit Purge tells them "you know he can shoot right?" - with Late Player and No Scorer - D's up 40-13 at halftime. The 2nd half the D's were having fun in O - passing the ball around, finding cutters, open shooters - Purge was racking up the "dimes" hitting open guys every possession - Thommo was also found Stu, Foo and Palk on the cuts. Our 2nd half O was a thing of beauty but we rested a bit on D allowing Unley to score 31 points. Purge hit a couple of pull up jumpers, Stu hit two more 3's and with 5 minutes left Palky decided to get in on the action again and hit four more 3's making 10 for the game and setting a new club record*** for 3's in a game. Win 76-44 - Palky 32, Stu 18, Foo 7 - Purge with a total of 12 dimes.
*A must have still been picking out the watch that he had to buy last time he missed a game.
**Unley's 5th arrived 30 seconds before tip off, he didn't have a uniform so he entered the court wearing a black polo shirt and black tracksuit pants. The ref said to him that he needed a uniform. He was provided a jersey and shorts. He put on the jersey ... looked at the shorts, said "these are too big", and entered the court with his tracksuit pants on. The ref told him to put on his shorts. 10 seconds later ... he hit a 3.
***We have never offically kept 3's in a game but I 99% sure this is the record. I have the current record with 9 which I set last season, Jimmy hit 9 in a summer game, Stu hit 10 a few years back but that was in summer (so was the unoffical record), Altmann hit 9 in an Intercol, Trimmy hit 14 in a game but that was a forfeit against 3 players with 2 Reds filling in for the other team so we didn't keep that scoresheet. So all that said - I am pretty sure this is the record but if anyone knows that they have hit this many let me know.
E's (6-5) v SPOC C (3-1-7) - Written by Max - The E’s faced up against SPOC C’s for the first time this season and came away with a tense 35-30 victory. Mike 13, Road Train 10, Kara 7.
The Good
- Mike Tye turning back time and showing everyone how it is done with a masterful display of his inside and outside game for 13 points
- Road Train making strong position 2 feet from the basket to pile on a season high 10 points
- Reggie ‘Iron Man’ Miller pacing himself to play 40 mins yet again and stay in the game until the end
- The E’s keeping a cool head in the final five minutes getting a couple of key baskets and stops
- Karamoshos unstoppable when receiving the ball on the cut to the basket
The Bad
- The E’s had a case of the fumbles, turning the ball over with poor decision making on 50/50 passes inside
- Morgan missing left hand layups
- Karamoshos trying to get away with NBA style travels
The Ugly
- The E’s not getting back in defence allowing SPOC to turn defensive boards into fast breaks

Palky's Player of the Week - Week 12: More great games from Liam, Jay, Orks and Mike Tye - they are killing it this year - but this week's Player of the Week is Nick Krantz. Fancy is having a great season - he is the 3rd leading scorer for the C's, he is rebounding really well and it as tough defender. His 13 points on Saturday shows that he is doing it on both ends - and with Goody and Lachie the C's have a formidibale frontcourt. It is like the 86 Celtics!

A's (11-1-0) v B's - Written by Mick - The A's came out after a strong win last week like they have every other week, hitting shots early and getting to the basket. A quick time out by the B's (having learned from previous weeks or from other teams) changed the pace of the game, as they beat the trap and started Getting to the hole, lead by Brendon. A's looked shaken. They've always crashed the boards well... Not today. They've generally moved the ball well... Not today... They've limited their turnovers. Not today. Credit to the B's, they changed things up, they moved the ball well, they wanted it more... For most of the game that is. Unfortunately for the B's the fairy tale ended when they got within 4 points of the A's. The A's started talking, got momentum and in 3 minutes of hustle, the game was over. 15 point lead to the A's and that was all she wrote. Great game overall. Well fought. A's win 47-34. A's - Liam 15, Orks and Foo 13 - B's - Brendon 12, Dillon and Mitch 6.
C's (9-3) v SPOC B (5-7) - Written by Jay - We were keen to impose ourselves on the game from the tip, and Lachy was hot to start, driving and getting to the hoop early and often. Krantz was doing work inside finishing off nicely after some good feeds. Jay hit a couple of 3s and Alex as well, and Reds were up 25-15 at the half. Saints started off the 2nd half strong, and scored 8 straight to cut the lead down, feeling quite chipper about themselves after knocking off the D's last week. However after a timeout, Reds picked up the intensity and it was game over as we went on a 16-2 run. Manners was all over the court forcing turnovers, running the break, and nastily swatting shots LeBron-vs-Curry style. Jay hit another 3, and Lachy and Krantz were continuing to score inside, recipients of some lovely dishes from Goody. Final 49-28. Lachy 14, Krantz 13 and Jay 13.
D's (7-5) v Unley A (3-8) - D's were missing Roughie and Big A* - Unley** were down their 2 good guards. D's started well with Palk hitting four 3's , Stu hit 2 and Fooey hit 1 ... Palky then hit 2 more to wit Purge tells them "you know he can shoot right?" - with Late Player and No Scorer - D's up 40-13 at halftime. The 2nd half the D's were having fun in O - passing the ball around, finding cutters, open shooters - Purge was racking up the "dimes" hitting open guys every possession - Thommo was also found Stu, Foo and Palk on the cuts. Our 2nd half O was a thing of beauty but we rested a bit on D allowing Unley to score 31 points. Purge hit a couple of pull up jumpers, Stu hit two more 3's and with 5 minutes left Palky decided to get in on the action again and hit four more 3's making 10 for the game and setting a new club record*** for 3's in a game. Win 76-44 - Palky 32, Stu 18, Foo 7 - Purge with a total of 12 dimes.
*A must have still been picking out the watch that he had to buy last time he missed a game.
**Unley's 5th arrived 30 seconds before tip off, he didn't have a uniform so he entered the court wearing a black polo shirt and black tracksuit pants. The ref said to him that he needed a uniform. He was provided a jersey and shorts. He put on the jersey ... looked at the shorts, said "these are too big", and entered the court with his tracksuit pants on. The ref told him to put on his shorts. 10 seconds later ... he hit a 3.
***We have never offically kept 3's in a game but I 99% sure this is the record. I have the current record with 9 which I set last season, Jimmy hit 9 in a summer game, Stu hit 10 a few years back but that was in summer (so was the unoffical record), Altmann hit 9 in an Intercol, Trimmy hit 14 in a game but that was a forfeit against 3 players with 2 Reds filling in for the other team so we didn't keep that scoresheet. So all that said - I am pretty sure this is the record but if anyone knows that they have hit this many let me know.
E's (6-5) v SPOC C (3-1-7) - Written by Max - The E’s faced up against SPOC C’s for the first time this season and came away with a tense 35-30 victory. Mike 13, Road Train 10, Kara 7.
The Good
- Mike Tye turning back time and showing everyone how it is done with a masterful display of his inside and outside game for 13 points
- Road Train making strong position 2 feet from the basket to pile on a season high 10 points
- Reggie ‘Iron Man’ Miller pacing himself to play 40 mins yet again and stay in the game until the end
- The E’s keeping a cool head in the final five minutes getting a couple of key baskets and stops
- Karamoshos unstoppable when receiving the ball on the cut to the basket
The Bad
- The E’s had a case of the fumbles, turning the ball over with poor decision making on 50/50 passes inside
- Morgan missing left hand layups
- Karamoshos trying to get away with NBA style travels
The Ugly
- The E’s not getting back in defence allowing SPOC to turn defensive boards into fast breaks

2016 SACBA Week 11 Results
Everyone needs to pay their subs - Roughie has contacted you if you haven't. After Saturday - if subs remain unpaid then stats will be disabled for those players on the web and those members will not get any subsidy if they are coming on the brewery tour. This is not up for debate - seemingly like this trial in the US. (if you are offended by NFSW words ... don't read it)

Short reports this week:
A's (10-1-0) v Gateway A (6-1-4) - Written by Mike - The A's have only struggled this year if they were slow to come out of the block. Often relying on their youth and speed, Liam proved to be an un-aging freak, knocking down some big 3s and scoring inside going for 11 early points. Things didn't slow down offensively either, Phil and Jack making shots, Foo scoring on drives and Orken playing 2 feet above everyone else, cleared up some boards and got to the bucket. It really got relentless in the second half when the As ball movement was at its peak for the season even finding some easy walk in lay ups as Mike skied down hill. Highlight for the game, James Smith didn't get an opportunity to hit anyone so he walked over to the scoreboard wall switch and turned it off. Literally giving up on the game. The final 4 minutes really felt like gateway had been invited to a PAC training to perform the task of "being a cone". Big win for the A's 70-30. Liam 20, Phil 14, Mike 10.
B's (2-9) v SPOC A (3-8) - SPOC came out of the gates hard and the B's had no answers. I left at half time but it was all over by the then. Phill was duelling hard with the Saints bigs. Lost 38-73. Phill 13, Jono 12, Kirkham 7.
C's (8-3) v Unley A (3-8) - NO REPORT. Win 34-31. Lachie 13, Krantz 8, Goody 6.
D's (6-5) v SPOC A (5-6) - Saints finally worked out that the D's like to shoot 3's and are old, so man is a good option. It was a back and forth game - Stu and Thommo were able to get to the basket time and time again and between them were 12 of 18 from the line. Stu and Palky hit a couple of 3's and A had a nice couple of baskets inside. Saints had a new bloke (who as it turns out works with Big A - so that is now 2 dudes from oppostion teams he gets to see on a daily basis) that was very handy and scored 12 points in the first half. The game was close but St. John hit two 3's and a couple of FTs to ice the game for SPOC. D's lost 33-38. Stu 13, Thommo 8, Palk 6.
E's (5-5) BYE
F's (6-3) v Taperoo A (5-1-4) - NO REPORT. Lost 25-29. G 12, Cam 11.
G's (5-5) v Burnside A (7-3) - Written by Nige - Travel travel travel foul travel travel double dribble travel foul travel travel travel foul foul travel foul oh wait I don’t know who committed that foul so cross it off travel foul three seconds foul foul foul travel travel foul. In a game dominated by the grey team, the black team started well to take an 8-0 lead early, then the Red team clawed back the rest of the way but fell short, Lost 21-18. Reid 8, Cale 6
Lady Reds (7-4) v Trinity A (2-9) - With no centres the Lady Reds played with 5 guards. They were able to run and run and run - getting a bunch of layups, there was not a lot of half court offense played by the Reds. At times they allowed themselves to play down to the opposition. Some positive signs with Tracey having a big game but there were a few too many missed layups. Win 44-19.Tracey 20, Megan 8, Rachel & Alicia 6.
Palky's Player of the Week - Week 11: With only a handful of wins this week it is an easy one. The ageless wonder who has been in the A's for 16 seasons, had his best shooting game for quite some time - hit four 3's in the first half and finishing with 20 - his highest points total since 2011, Liam Golding. He's kind of like Tony Hawk.

2016 SACBA Week 10 Results
MILESTONE: Last Wednesday, Lachlan Campbell played his 200th game for the Old Reds. Lachie joined the club in 2011 - endearing himself to everyone by asking a lot of questions. Highlights of his time in the club - He won an A Grade title in the A's in 2015 and a Thursday A Grade title in 2011. He was named Best Team Man in the B's in 2011 and 2013, and MVP for Monday in 2012. He was also awarded he Best Club Man in 2012, which is also the year he has the record for most games in a season with 59. A great team mate - he plays hard D and rebounds, he is a great passer from the high post and his unorthodox driving/post up game combined with his consistent outside jumper makes him tough to stop. He has been one of the top 10 players in the club for the last 5 years. Lachie is in the top 20 of all time scorers, the top 25 in games played, top 10 in FTs attempted and made and top 20 in fouls. Good work Lach.
FROM THE SOCIAL COORDINATOR: A reminder of our upcoming Adelaide craft-beer tour. Please advise if you are attending as we are finalising numbers to book the bus, would be good to get a few more along.
The PAOCBC will be engaging in a craft brewery bus tour around metropolitan Adelaide on the 16th of July twenty sixteen. We have done this a couple of times with great success and hereby invite expressions of interest for the upcoming tour.

A's (9-1-0) v SPOC A (2-8) - Written by Mike - Mike* scored the first basket of the game and had 5 of the first 9... If you are letting him score, then your defence sucks. Phil, Jack and Orken had no issue making it to the rack. And Foo and Liam ... Well no one can stop them at the best of time... And now was the best of time! A's win against an [ed change] an opposition that is struggling at the moment. Orken with a dunk followed by a tech. "Which was totally worth it."

B's (2-8) v Gateway A (6-1-3) - Written by Lenny - I thought that it was one of the greatest “character” wins of the club. Almost going alongside the A’s win against Saints when only having 5 and needing a win to keep going in the finals. Jono grew a leg and kept his head and “generalled” everything – he started out of the blocks like he meant to play and never stopped – and his belief was enormous. Phill just kept banging away inside against huge opposition – often 3 against 1 – and the way the B’s played against those 3 guys much bigger than them was awesome. Tim was always an offensive and defensive threat. Brendon started to take it to the hole and always had good free inside looks – it was almost like Gateway refused to rate him and so didn’t guard him. And Manners, buttering up from the earlier disappointing game and making up the 5 just ran his heart out and defensively was on to everything – even when he started to stack up the fouls to get to 3. Once he switched to #9, that guy’s influence went out of the game (he had scored 11 of their 16 points – 3 X 3, one little running 2) and Gateway were beaten. Coming down into the last 5, the B’s just kept playing disciplined ball and controlled their tempo perfectly. And Gateway were almost full strength – and they were the ones who lost their cool and got snippy with the umps – we never did. I can’t quite remember but I think that at one point we led by 20 – we certainly were in front by 17 for long minutes – and that got even more into Gateway’s heads. I told the boys at the end that I couldn’t have been more proud of them and I meant it. Win 45-28. Jono 19, Brendon 12 Phill 8.
C's (7-3) v D's (6-4) - In the previous contests, the C's have owned the D's much like the Johnny Lawrence owns Daniel LaRusso* on the beach in sunny California. The game started well for the D's with Purge setting the tone hitting 3 straight mid range jumpers - Palky then hit a 3, Stu hit a crafty runner off a nice pass from Purge, Thommo finished inside and then Stu hit a crazy layup. D's up 2-16 after 10 minutes (which was pretty good considering they only scored 17 in the whole game last time they played them). Krantz scored inside, Jamie hit a tough runner and Lachie made 2 FTs - D's up 19-7 at halftime. The C's then closed the gap to 2 (21-23) - the D's had good looks but were not making their shots. Ned hit a wide open 3 because Palk made a stupid defensive error, Jay got out on the break and made a couple of layups, Jamie made another tough shot and Lachie scored inside and 1. The D's settled when Foo was fouled on a 3 and he made all 3 free throws and Stu hit back to back 3's late. D's D held up all game and they won by 10 - 21-31. Jamie, Lachie and Jay 4 points for the C's and Stu 10, Purge 6 and Thommo 5 for the D's.

E's (5-5) v F's (6-3) - Written by Sime - With schedule changes we’d waited a while for the Central 2/3 derby between Max’s E’s & G’s F’s (confused much?). The game almost failed to launch with a scheduling issue keeping Charlie ‘Pony’ Baker stuck in the gate – big thanks to Ned for running a 2nd game to ensure the G’s had 5. The G’s were therefore without a sub and started with 4 while a complicated deal was negotiated with Ned, and they were also missing JT and B-Rad (and the E’s were still missing Kobe). After a couple of trots up & down the court, G zeroed in on the ring and fired at will, dropping 3 treys for the half and a deuce, while Cam was lively under the ring, getting to the line a couple of times including an and-one. For the E’s, Max also found range downtown while the Silver Fox settled in around midtown, hitting 3 nice shots. Reggie chipped in from Mike’s place and one under the hoop. It was overall a close battle, the E’s eking out a 2 point half time lead, 18-16, with G leading all scorers with 11. The lack of a sub took its toll in the 2nd, with the E’s rotating fresh legs, turning up the D at one end & finding their shooters at the other. The D was set up by The Road Train, who built an impressive wall to make the F’s inside game a lot more difficult and Hendo who threw another block party (all invited), including 3 in one play. Kara went Hulk style and ripped open his singlet on the way to the bucket and a 10 point half. Ned had asked Reggie in the 1st half why he didn’t shoot any more – perhaps it was old age that he forgot how much he liked a 3 and went for 3 of them in the 2nd (appreciate the encouragement Ned). The Silver Fox also stepped it up with another 9 in the 2nd, while Morgan was active under the ring and rewarded by trips to the line. For the F’s 2nd half, Ned also got going on the offence with 8 of his own, and Tone became a livewire, looking from inside and outside, eating up a couple of tasty dishes from G for his own 8 point half. But it was the E’s day, their shooting came at a (guessed) decent percentage by finding the guy with the best look for much of the day and they outlasted the F’s to build a lead through the second half. Final score was 54-38, Mike and Simon with 15 for the E’s, Kara 10, while G had 11 and Ned 9 for the F’s. Big thanks to Sean & Lenny for dutifully manning the scoresheet and scoreboard, your efforts are really appreciated.
G's (5-5) v Big Sunday B (5-1-4) - NO REPORT. Loss 36-42, Reid 13, Caldy and Matt 6.
Lady Reds (6-4) v CityReach A (8-2) - The Lady Reds will miss the height and scoring of O'Buckets - so Rachel recruited Karen English*. Hannah scored the first basket off a great pass and cut from Karen. It was a back and forth contest - Alicia and Rachel hit 3s and City Reach hit 2 of their own, Karen scored 8 points from foul line jumpers and City Reach did the same through #7. Tied at 18 at half time. The 2nd half Karen kept the Reds in it - making 4 shots - she has some crafty post moves, soft touch around the basket and mid range jumpers - I am calling it now - she is the best player in the league. Alicia scored on the break and hit a 3 - but CityReach just kept making inprobable shot after inprobable shot - they made 6 shots in the 2nd half and 5 of them had no right to go in. Down 2 with 45 seconds left - Megan missed a 3, CityReach got the ball, they turned it over with 10 seconds to go and Alicia had a great look for 3 for the win but missed it. Lost 35-37. Karen had 17, Alicia 8, Rachel 6. The Lady Reds are struggling a bit at the moment but they have 9 weeks to get Karen into the mix and start clicking. I still think they have a great chance to win the title but it won't be easy.

Palk's Player of the Week - Week 10: Some great performance this week, but for his inside, outside game and his leadership, Jono Self, for leading the B's to their first win in atleast 4 years over Gateway. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come from Jono - talent to burn, just need to get that effort every week.
