Milestone:
Andrew “Goody” Good will play his 100th game for
the club this weekend. Goody has been a member of the club for 6 years. He
started in the B’s but after 4 games it became apparent that he was called Good
for a reason and not Andrew Adequate. Goody was a member of the A’s during
their historic 5 A Grade titles. He is the ultimate team guy, he does what is
asked of him, never complains about minutes or his role – just gets out there
and works super hard. He hasn’t been awarded with many individual awards but he
is one of the best big guys ever in the club and has 5 titles to prove it.
Congrats Goody!
To
the reports:
A’s
(5-1) v The Corner B – So Palky tells the A’s the wrong
game time … he told the boys 1.50pm … the game was actually 5.10pm (that’s for
not beating Knightsbridge last year in the Prelim). My bad … but not as bad as some of these movie scenes (the
Indian one is amazing). The boys leave and all come back (except Hobbs who
thought cuddling time with his Mrs was more important). But do you know who
didn’t rock up … the other team – Forfeit win. The A’s have played 1 game in 4
weeks.
B’s
(4-3) v SPOC A – This was going to be a big test for
the B’s – Saints were missing Scammell, Charles, Hautop and Bobo. It was a
tight first half – Saints hit a few jumpers and the B’s were missing a few too
many – but their D was solid and they were getting good looks. Down 4 at
halftime. 2nd half the B’s got a 1 point lead – Darcy got inside, Davey
hit a jumper and Darcy hit a 3. The Reds turned the ball over a bit leading to
a few easy fast break baskets. Down 3 with 2minutes to go – Kong smacked into
Mike … double foul … Mike was understandably upset – tech foul. They made the
FTs – then got to the line again and made those … Saints 7 point lead. Reds
missed some late 3s and Saints won by 10 (30-40). It was a good showing by the
B’s and I couldn’t be more happy with their effort – Saints too good on the
day. Goody and Lachy controlled the glass and were herculean in their efforts –
Kong called us floppers on Facebook … maybe they fall over because he is fricken
massive and doesn’t know how strong he actually is. Darcy had 9, Ned 7 and
Lachy 5.
C’s
(7-0) v Holdfast B – Holdfast B are a scrappy team – a
Saints clone – throw up junk and hustle super hard on the boards. The work really
hard and the C’s weren’t ready for their unothdox game style, was 10-6 at
halftime. In the 2nd half Madman went crazy – he made 5 straight
jumpers and 8teh team scored on 8 of their first 10 shots. Tommo got to the line and made 4 of 10
FTs, G got hot and scored 8 and Madman hit his final jumper – as well as
getting a steal and a block. C’s won 35-22. Madman had 14, G 10 and Tommo 6. C’s
move to 7-0 and a huge game this week – another Grand Final rematch with The
Corner A. More momentum is building for an epic C team.
D’s
(4-3) v SPOC B – Written by Simon - We
arrived prepared for Saints, but not prepared for the umpires to feature so
heavily in the game. We had perhaps the worst combination possible in that they
have a very similar umpiring style and are equally intolerant of even a furtive
glance on a no call. It was as dangerous a combination as Mick & Lachy
at an open bar, Flair at a school prom or Yates walking past a mirror
shop. Being told at the tip off that any noise made after a call would
result in a tech without a warning had us scared. Saints had a little more to
their normal chuck & crash game, with better driving options and the
ability to spread the floor well to enable this. Our D was ok, never great. At
the other end, we had trouble breaking their zone & relied on outside shots
to keep things close, down 17-13 at the half. Kirkham was the only player to
consistently find his range & although we found Lunny & Crawf around
the foul line a couple of times, our O was a little stagnant. Turning the ball
over regularly never helps & we were guilty of that too. Still we kept
fighting into the 2nd half, switching to a zone for the first time this year
& had the margin within 4 with only a few mins to go. A couple of bad calls
didn't sit well with the boys, who made their displeasure known to the refs -
who added to their displeasure with techs to both Crawf & Jono. It was a
disappointing end to the game as we let Saints have a couple of easy buckets to
push the margin out, final score 41-30. Kirkham best with 12, Jono & Reggie
had 6 each.
E’s
(2-5) v Oakden A – The report I have was “too much
Garfoot”. The Reds lost 24-45. Moorfoot 8, Bubner and Brad 6.
F’s
(7-0) vs Northgate – Written by Downtown Chris Brown
- The F’s came up against the 'Ballers' this week with a full squad. Starting
out with a 3-2 defence gave us plenty of opportunities to disrupt their plays
and get a few points on the break. Jay got 8 in the first, including two points
off the most generous assist to ever occur in an F grade game from Udit on the
break (they were the only two players in the offensive half when Udit got a
long pass in the key). Road Train put up a triple, but missed. We managed to
keep our opponents to 10 in the first but with only five players they let it
blow out in the second. Heaps of our points came off the break, often with two
or three Reds players on the run against little or no defence. To be honest it
became a little shambolic at times when the other team just couldn't follow
Brad, Jay and Jon H up the court. Brad scored 9 in the second. They ended up in
serious foul trouble sending us to the line way too often. We flogged them
in what ended up being a bit of a messy affair with 15 of our points coming
from 28 free throws. Stu's 3/4 on the buzzer following a foul/tech combo from
the other team got us just over the 50% mark. Jay got 14, Brad 11, Jon H
8, Reds won 45-15.
G’s
(3-4) v SPOC D – Written by Hitman - This week, G-Force took on SPOC’s
D Grade. The pre-game talk was about putting last week’s disaster behind
us, and to concentrate on looking after the ball, playing D, and
rebounding. From the tip we put words into action, the ball movement was
crisp, and we were rewarded with good shot opportunities. At the other
end the D was active, forcing turnovers and poor shots, and at both ends we
were active on the boards. The result was an early lead by a couple of
baskets which we maintained throughout the first half, only a couple of lucky
3s by SPOC kept them in touch, and the half-time margin was 12-9. In the
second half G-Force again made the early running and a 3 by Reid and a bucket
from Sam gave us a handy lead. Unfortunately we followed up with a
lengthy dry spell, including one defensive sequence where we allowed SPOC to
play their game – put up a rubbish shot, somehow get the ball back, shoot
rubbish again, and repeat until they scored. Another SPOC 3 got them
close, and then with just two minutes left the score was tied (so we were told
– the scoreboard again not working). At this point Reid took over the
game, scoring on a tough drive, although SPOC answered immediately with a
bucket to tie the game again. After some good passing, Reid drove again
for a hoop and the harm to restore the lead, but missed the free throw.
This time SPOC had no answer, and with time winding down we held onto the
ball while SPOC racked up the fouls trying desperately for a steal. With
10 seconds left they were called for their 8th foul for the half* and sent Reid
to the line. He made both to make SPOC’s final desperate 3-point attempt
academic. An excellent all-round effort, we kept turnovers to a minimum,
won the boards, played solid D, and allowed 0 fast-break points, a win to be
proud of. Final score 23-19, Reid Amos with 13 and Sam with 4.
* in fact this was their 8th foul called for the entire game
– all in the last 10 minutes, with 5 or 6 called in the last two.
Lady
Reds (4-1-2) v Unley Park A – Unley Park A are undefeated in
the WA Grade – they beat Adelaide last week who don’t lose very much. Unley are
massive – they have a big centre and another low post player who I would argue
is the best player in the league. They surround them with savvy guards who play
good D, run the break well and can shoot. The Reds came out hot – Megan and
Jordy both made 3’s, Jordy scored on the break and hit a shot in the lane,
Alicia hit a long j and got a crafty move baseline and then Jordy hit a banked
3. Unley were scoring too – with their low post player having 10 quick points before
she picked up her 3rd foul and had to sit the rest of the half.
Georgie and Wans were battling hard on the boards and Georgie made 3 of 4 free
throws and the Reds were up 2 at halftime (22-20). The 2nd half was
a grind – with both teams playing great D – Tracy and Loz up top for the Reds
were making life tough for the shooters and the scoring dried up down low. With
3 minutes left – Alicia made a big 3. Megan then made a great pull up j from 15
feet to give the Reds a 4 point lead. Unley shot themselves in the foot by
going 4 of 12 from the line in the 2nd half and the girls pulled out
a great victory 31-30. With 5 seconds left Megan tore towards the basket and
took a wild runner … she thought they were losing. Jordy had 12, Alicia 7 and
Megan 5. It was great team game by all – the Reds had 8 players and it is tough
to get everyone a solid run so thanks to Loz, Emma and Tracy who didn’t get as
many minutes as they normally would … I will try and get it right next time.
