SACBA Week 9 Preview

So if you want to come on the Beerfest Adelaide Hills bus trip on Saturday July 13 please let me know ASAP - we are booking the bus, locking in the venues etc. by the end of the week at the absolute latest.

Note gang - the A's, B's, C's and Lady Reds are at Saints. All the games are in order so why not make a day of it?

A's v Brighton A @ 2.40pm - The A's played their first game in what felt like a month on Saturday ... and it looked like it. There were moments of brilliance interspersed with large chunks of whatever the opposite of brilliance is (to the thesaurus) folly, incompetence, stupidity, ineptitude, silliness, idiocy, inanity, simple-mindedness. I like "folly". Brighton have some good players and play solid basketball but they are a tad outmatched in the A Grade.

B's v Gateway A @ 1.50pm - Gateway are playing some of the best offensive basketball I have seen in years. They move the ball well, shoot the bejusus out of it, run the break and have two guys down low who can score - Smith is still the premier big guy in the league. The B's lost by 2 last time they played them - an ill advised foul, an even more ill-advised 3 and a non box out away from winning. The B's have been playing great D for the last month and turn every game into a grind - now they just need to stop turning it over and finishing around the basket.

C's v Unley Park A @ 1.00pm - Unley Park are unorthodox - they have 3 guys who can make shots. They are a tough match up - they aren't big but they rebound well, they don't make a hell of a lot of 3's but they do make outside shots. The C's will need to rebound well (need to hit the glass even harder with Thommo away) to beat these guys cos they can make you pay. It is 1st v 3rd - a win would improve the chances of the important Top 2 finish.

D's v Dunn A @ 1.00pm - Dunn are still the team to beat in NE1 - you need stop their shooters and their big guy inside. It is all about defensive effort ... and that is where the D's have struggled this year - to stay engaged for the full 40 minutes. It is about want. One of the D's players said on seeing the ladder last week, that they were 4th on the ladder "fuck that we should be first". Granted it was said in a Gen Y way ... but yes ... you should be first ... so it comes to mind "why aren't you first?" I bet it has something to do with effort. Effort is the one thing that you have absolute control over on a basketball court - the ball may or may not go in, a rebound may or may not come to you, a loose ball may or may not come to you, a guy on the other team may or may not be on fire, your team mates may or may not pass to you, the refs may or may not see the call ... but the one thing that you can control on a basketball court is your effort. If all 5 guys on the court are giving 100% effort and you still lose then so be it ... not your day, if you are giving 80% effort and lose ... that is your fault because there was more to give. I think this D's team has the talent to be the best team in this league and I think the guys in this team have the talent to be the future of the club ... now one decision needs to be made ... are you going to put in the effort? Took me 20 years to work this out ... don't let it take you 20 years.

E's v Saints C @ 2.40 - Beat them just because they are Saints and Intercol is coming up. Foot on the throat. And while we are at it ... massive shout out to Moorfoot. He has made 11 of the his last 25 Free Throws. For a guy who shoots 20% career from the line that is a massive improvement. Same with Thommo - a the dude got down to 9% (he was 2 of 21) .. he is 10 of his last 22 (almost 50%). Do you know how they both did it ... practice! They shot heaps of them and they improved. In the words of Shakespeare "IT IS NOT FUCKING ROCKET SCIENCE PEOPLE". Well done lads.

F's v East All Stars A @ 1.50pm - EASA are 2nd in this league. I know nothing of them ... I am just assuming that they are awesome because they are All Stars! All I know is I want to be in the F's - I think I would have heaps of fun and I would get to shoot the ball lots.

Every week, Brownie send me the scoresheet and I think "maybe this is the week ... maybe this is the week". The week that one of the members of the Old Reds Team of the 20 Years puts up ridiculous numbers - but up to now it has yet to happen. So can I say to you Brad and Jay and Jons and Downtown Chris Brown ... GET STU THE BALL ... IT'S DANGEROUS FUCKING STU FOR CHRIST SAKE. The last game he played before he went down with his knee, he had 21 in a half against the 2nd best team in the A Grade - that guy is still in there - he just needs to be released. Like Monkey, in that egg, on that mountain top ... Dangerous is irrepressible.

G’s v Saints E’s @ 3.30pm – If there is something that never ever gets old it is beating Saints. The G’s are starting to really improve – Brendon and Reid have established themselves as the scorers in the team and are leading the way. The key to beating Saints is solid D and rebound – you have to clean up those boards … those guys are relentless because they know no other way.

Lady Reds v Trinity A @ 3.30pm – The Lady Reds are on an absolute roll – they have knocked off the 2 best teams in the last 2 weeks. Wans is away from the team for a few weeks so the team will need to get on the boards to help out Georgie. It is the Lady Reds defence that has really stepped up and that has led to easy baskets at the other end with Jordy and Megan able to get out on the break. Trinity had their first win last week and even though the Reds pumped them last time they need to stay aggressive to kill the game off early.
