The Beerfest Bus Cruise is on for Saturday July 13. It is approx $50 which will pay for the bus from Seven Stars (at 12.30pm) returning at 6ish, a tour of the Brewery, tasting and bite to eat at The Prancing Pony at Mt Barker and beers on the bus. We will then head to Bierhaus in Loberthal and Grumpy's and Hahndorf (where you can purchase your own tasty SA boutique beers). If you want to come let me know - there are still 5 spots left on the bus ... we still really want extras to come. Mates, family and partners are more than welcome - let me know.
Thanks to all the scorers this week esp. Sean who came out to score for the A's, B's and C's.
The stats are up to date here.
To the reports:
A's (6-2) v Brighton A (1-8) - The A's were up against Brighton who had their 2 leading scorers return to the team after being absent last week. The Reds were missing Liam, Corey and Phil. A quick start with Orks scoring inside, Hobbs and Foo getting out on the break (with 6 and 10 point respectivley in the first half) and Tauny hitting a big 3 - Reds up 28-12 at halftime. The second half was a grind, as Brighton were doing exactly what the league was trying to stamp out - hitting off the ball, talking trash and being overly aggressive. Hobbsy kept scoring and enjoyed the downhill skiing conditions. Jack controlled the game well and Orken was too much inside. A's won 44-28 to move to 6-2. Hobbs had 16, Foo 10 and Orks 8.
B's (6-3) v Gateway A (8-2) - The B's were up against the top of the ladder Gateway. The majority of Gateway's team were away at a basketball carnival (Jo, Cal and James Smith) and Kerwin working the Reds were up against a new group of players. B's came out very aggressive with Mike scoring off the tip and Darcy getting an early layup. The B's played stifling D and made life very difficult for Gateway. Darcy had his best half in an Old Reds uniform, hitting jumpers from everywhere with 13 first half points. Reds up 7 at halftime (13-20). The 2nd half was a grind - Tommy from Gateway hit a couple of 3's to keep it close and the Reds didn't shut the door by missing FTs and wide open layups on the break. Lachy and Goody did a great job low and scored inside and Billy, playing his first game for the B's, hit two big 3's. The Reds held on to win by 9 (38-29). Darcy had 15, Billy 8 and Lachy 5. The B's defence is holding up every week and I am so happy with our resolve and effort - we are looking good and a Top 4 finish is still very much the goal ... I put it down to the fact that the B in the B's obviously stands for Beards.
C's (8-1) v Unley Park A (5-4) - Written by G - Today we were up against Unley. Unley came out in a 3-2 which we haven't had much experience with and scoring was pretty slow. Scoring was pretty even through the first half with us down 4 at the change. The second half started poorly with 3 turnovers from the first three offences. We slowly pegged their lead back to be ahead by 1 with 10mins to go. Our offence went quiet and scored a few baskets and we were down by 4 with 4 to play. We didn't score on the next 4 offences and were down by 11. With the game over we made a few baskets at the end. We lost 46-37. G had 11, Phill 9, and Kobe 8.
D's (5-1-3) v Dunn A (7-1-1) - Written by Simon - It was a different looking Dunn to our 1st encounter, only 5 players, but taller, & they were to show much more of an inside game, starting strongly & getting to an early lead. The D's rallied and went with Dunn for the rest of the half, but never eating into their lead. Crawf was active early with a couple of buckets. Everything was dropping for Dunn, lots of very friendly rolls, halftime it was 21-15, Jono with 5, Crawf 4. Dunn only had 5 players & we thought Reggie may have ended Big Headband's day with a clean strip of the ball under the ring that hit the ball with such impact it somehow injured his wrist *. He battled on but didn't do much in the 2nd half. The D's had a spirited comeback in the 2nd, forcing Dunn to call 2 panicked timeouts as they were worn out from hard running & defending our charge. The boys kept active on the boards too at both ends which was good to see. The scoring came through 3's from Pritch, strong work under the hoop from Crawf & a 3 & mid range J from Jono. With only 2 minutes to go we were just 2 points down, when one of their players badly dislocated his finger (knuckles don't normally bend to 90 degrees) & we had the chance for 5 on 4. Despite some good drives & shots, we couldn't close the gap. Jono got under the basket & his shot was half an inch off going in, but went to the line with the chance to draw the game. He nailed them both for a 35 all draw. Although we missed the opportunity to beat the top ranked team, the comeback was impressive. Jono had 12, Crawf 9, Pritch 6. Shout out to Phil W for scoring the game.
* no foul so must have been all ball
E's (4-5) v SPOC C (2-7) - Win 39-19. Brad Daniel 11, Bubs 9, Rough Justice 6. Game Report to come.
F's (9-0) v East All Stars A (6-3) - This week at Cedar we had yet another week without a functioning scoreboard - just wanted to get that out at the start. It's absolutely ridiculous that at a brand new stadium they can't get the scoreboard working after it's long history of problems. Our 3-2 defence was pretty effective in the first, though our offence was average at best. Even when we did get good ball movement and open shots no one could finish, either in the key or from the field. We were down by one point at the half (7-8) and our poor offensive form continued in the second with the exception of Road Train who got very hot and scored 9 for the half, salvaging an otherwise scrappy game. Brad got a pretty soft tech under the new umpiring paradigm (a warning to other teams - they're calling everything) as the game heated up in the last 10 minutes. Thankfully their outside shots weren't dropping and our defensive pressure remained high the whole game, making life difficult for them on the perimeter while our big guys locked down the key. We won 18-20 in the end and were lucky to get over the line considering we were probably hitting somewhere between 10-15% of our open shots, with all of us guilty of some easy misses. Road Train claimed the majority of our total with 11 points and about 400 boards.
G's (5-4) v SPOC E (3-6) - Written by Hitman - This week the mighty G-Force faced SPOC’s E Grade. Pre-game the focus was on continuing our good form of recent weeks and sticking to the fundamentals – limiting turnovers, hustling on D, hitting the boards. From the opening tip words became deeds, our defence was active and forcing turnovers, when shots went up we were dominating the glass, we ran hard in transition both ways, and we took care of the ball in the half-court. To their credit SPOC managed to graft together a few buckets to claw back the early margin and tie the game, but it wasn’t an effort they could sustain, at half-time the margin had been pushed back out to a 16-10 edge. The second half was almost an exact repeat of the first, once again G-Force began well, SPOC had slightly the better of the middle section to close the gap, and G-Force controlled the latter stages, dominating in the running game. In the end, a comfortable 30-21 victory. Apart from the low turnover count and the significant edge in fast break points, foul shooting was once again a positive feature: G-Force 6-8, SPOC 3-11. Sam led all scorers with 9, Reid and Brendan with 8 apiece. Many thanks to Matt for performing scoring duties.
Lady Reds (6-1-2) v Trinity A (1-8) - Only 4 players came for Trinity and the game was officially called it a forfeit. The games was played out and the Reds took it is as shooting practice. Alicia and Loz the big recipients of only 4 opponents by making jumpers all over the place. Georgie worked herself into the game, much to the delight of her boyfriend. Emma hit a nice jumper late and Tracey was very crafty in offence showing her Steve Nash like court vision. The Reds won 43-16. Alicia 12, Georgie 11, Loz 8. Thanks to Lachy for scoring.
