Palky's Top 5 Favourite All Time Old Red's Saturday Teams - Honourable Mentions

Reminder that the Lawn Bowls night is Friday April 11th and the AGM is next Tuesday April 8th.

In the countdown to the start of the season new SACBA season on May 3rd - I thought I would do my Top 5 Favourite PAOCBC Saturday Teams. The one rule (other than the obvious one of they must be Old Reds team) is they had to be Champions.

I couldn’t do it without mentioning some of the great teams that missed out of the Top 5 (remember I only have stats from 1999 and the club started in 1993).

In no particular order:

1996 A's - This team had A, Sean, Nick Holden, Dar and Sar, Shane Moynihan and Chris Mann. I don't remember the grade, I don't remember the opponent ... I just remember Dar had 27 points in the best Grand Final ever played by an Old Red and the game was a blow out. I remember A and Nick Holden both hit 3's in the last 2 plays of the game.

2002 A’s – this was really the precursor to the decade of A’s dominance. This was Big A’s first year of leading the team in his own right. We were huge with a 3 big man rotation – we had “Caffeine” Jimmy Jones establishing himself as the best big man in the league, this was Grant Nalder’s first year in the A’s and Big A. The Wildman was the best scorer in the league and Darsow, Liam, Manner and Simon Miller as the other guards. Great team with so much depth. Look at Manner’s 3’s there … 18! They went 17-2 and won back to back titles. The next year they went up to A Grade.

2013 F’s – The only PAOCBC to ever go undefeated. They had 3 great guards in Brad Hughes, Dangerous Stu and Jay Nguyen. This was Stu’s first season back after 3 years on the sidelines with a knee injury. The team had no height other than Road Train Jon Read, so he had to play 40 most games. The role players of Jon, Phil, Udit and Brownie were all contributors. This team will be remembered for their 18 game win streak and the amazing Grand Final.

They got down a few baskets in the 2nd half – Brad rolled his ankle and was sidelined … but courageously came back on to lead the team. Stu, who had an ok year but no big games, tapped back into the well and had a 15 point 2nd half and hit a clutch 3 in the last minute. With the 10 seconds to go the game was tied. Phil drove and the ball ended up with Jay who hit the shot on the buzzer. Amazing game, amazing season.

2004 B’s – This is the only Old Reds team to ever finish 4th at the end of the regular season and win the title. We were 5th and were playing 4th in the last game of the season. They were they only team we hadn’t beaten all year – we had to win to just make the finals. We won. We won the Elimination Final easily. We went into the Prelim as underdogs and won by 30. Phil Motteram and I had our season high in those games. I remember coming to the final and our opponents “Aldgate” looked shocked that we had made it – they didn’t even know they were playing us. This was an advantage to us. We won the GF by 16. I top scored with 11, Max had 10. Matt Just hit 2 3’s … he had hit 1 up to that point in the season. Matt Just was incredible this year – he would have had 5 or 6 games of 10+ steals. Bigs – Brad, Phil, Foran – Guards Max, Roughie, BB and Palk. 4 months in to the season Wheats said he had enough and left the team.

2005 D’s – Before there was the 2013 F’s there was the 2005 D’s. This is the most dominant team in Old Reds history. It was veteran A’s and B’s players playing into the reformed D’s. Sean constructed a team of savvy veterans (who were way younger at that time than I am now) to do one thing – win a title. Their winning percentage is still the highest winning percentage in this history of the club and a record that I doubt will ever be beaten. They won a game 107-3 (a club record in points for in a single game and a club record for points against in a single game). To have 5 guys averaging over 8 ppg doesn’t happen often.

2013 C’s – This was an incredible team. They had 4 great bigs – Phill, Tomo, Kobe and Hendo, a timeless/ageless shooter in Madman, 2 great defensive guards and floor leaders in BB and Manner and G had one of the Top 3 shooting seasons in the history of the basketball club. The C’s were an incredible defensive unit, and through G they scored a lot of points. They only lost 2 games – both to Unley Park – the team they played in the Qualifying Final and Grand Final. In the Prelim, Unley Park played Box and 1 on G and Madman scored 14 points in the 2nd half to lead the C’s to the win. In the GF, Unley Park got up 13 after a hot start. They were again playing box and 1 on G – he hit two 3’s at the end of the 1st half to get the lead back to 7. In the 2nd half he scored 11 in one of the most inspiring displays I have ever witnessed by a Red. Phill had 15 in the GF too.

2002 C’s – I saw this team play 2 games all season as they were at another stadium but doesn’t stop them being mentioned. I mention them for 2 reasons. In a mid-season game A and I went out to watch them and they were then coached by Life Member Ben Christie. Ben gave a halftime address that will go down in the annuls as the most amusing coaching address I have ever heard … in the least intense voice I have heard from a coach he said “c’mon guys … where is the hustle … where is the intensity”. We still say it to this day. The main reason why this team makes it is because it was the first time I ever saw Matt “Rough Justice” Just and Mark “Max Power” Powell play. I said to some “I am going to win a title with those 2 one day”. At the end of the game – the C’s were down 1 with seconds left on the clock. Max drove and was fouled … the clock showed zeros. Max went to the line with 2 shots to win it. SWISH … SWISH. Game over.

2008 E’s – This was one of the most dominant teams. Corey MacLean came into the club with Jamie Young and George. Udit, Caldy, Nelly and Macca were young and enthusiastic and Vods came in mid-season to give them the big man they needed. Corey was incredible – he was a walking Triple Double machine. Did what needed to be done – could do anything on a basketball court (except dunk or stay un-injured). In the GF Corey scored 18 of his 21 in the 1st half in a lights out shooting display.
