2016 SACBA Finals Week 2

We have 3 Grand Finals this weekend at Wayville. The games start at 2.15pm.

After the games we will head back to The Seven Stars for our post Grand Final drinks. Come one come all.

Also on Sunday - from 3pm - Purge (TommyJr) and Palky (DJ bPod) will be spinning some tracks at The Franklin (on Franklin St opposite the Bus Station). If you around come down, have a drink for our Post Grand Final session - to celebrate what has been a great season. Purge will be Trip & Hip Hop + Chillout Sessions / Cafe Del Mar styles - perfect for a crafty Sunday and Palky will be playing some laid back indie pop.

Pop Saturday October 15 in the diary - that is Club Lunch - details to come.

To the reports:
B's v Gateway A - The B's had the skills and talent to win games this year - they just lost their way a bit after a long campaign. I don't think I have ever seen a team fight like the B's that showed up against Saints and Gateway in the last 2 weeks - it showed how far believing in yourself and your teammates can take you. Super Coach spoke about not allowing Gateway to shoot 3's - if they kept them below 3 for the game they could win ... Gateway could have all the 2's they want ... just no 3's. The B's got the jump early - Dillon provided the scoring punch - getting an awesome tip in, a mid range jumper and a 3, Moops made a couple of baskets, Mitch came of the bench and made a 3. Gateway stayed in it through some great shooting from Jo - making four 3's in the first half and having 14 points (so much for holding down their 3's). Reds up 24-22 - the B's were in a good spot as Jono and Brenno had a tight first half - if they could get going then who knows. Phill was blocking everything inside meaning Gateway had to keep firing from deep Jo and Joel made two 3's each but the Reds kept it close with Jono's scoring and Brenno hit a clutch 3. It was close down the stretch but an unlikley source for 3's stepped up, Mr Rachel Meyer, and made 2 unlikely 3's - that proved too much. The B's gave it all that they had - they fought so hard. A tough season - but they had 2 good wins during the season against both Saints and Gateway - but I will remember their great finals run. Their game against Saints in the Elimnation Final will go down as one of the 10 best games in club history and this loss will be held in high regard for the tenacity that they showed. Lost 42-52 - Jono 11, Dillon 9, Brendon 8.

D's v Unley Park A - Unley Park brough out their strongest team that the D's have faced this year and they made life tough early for the D's - making 3's and scoring inside. Palky hit a couple of early 3's and Stu made four 3's and was able to get inside when Unley pushed up too high. The Reds had a bunch of makeable layups but missed them and went in up 3 (21-18) at half time. Unley were spreading the D's D and made 3 mid range j's. Slowly but surely the D's started to get on top - A and Thommo were controlling the glass when the guards forced a miss - Stu was getting to the line and converted 5 of 7, Madman made a jumper, Palky made a 3 and Stu hit 2 more 3's and the D's pulled out a 10 point win 42-32. Stu had 27 and Palk 9.

This win means the club has won another title - well done lads.
E's v Knightsbridge A - The E's semi-final game against Knightsbridge is one of those contests that is especially difficult to recount because despite of all the bizarre calls from the refs and the fact that we didn't play particularly well, we ended up losing by only 4 points and with another couple of buckets could have come away with a spot in the grand final. The E's got off to a quick start from the tip off with Road Train slapping the ball forward to Morgan for an easy layup, then followed by a put back on the next play. From there the refs exerted their influence with a game of 'blow the whistle and then roll a dice to decide the call to make.' This included fouls instead of jump balls, 3 second violations instead of fouls, travels, charging fouls, fouls when it should have been a no call, no calls when it should have been a foul. At times it boarded on farcical with most of the calls going against the E's. Morgan racked up 3 dubious fouls within 10 minutes and sat out the rest of the half on the bench. Knightsbridge meanwhile were playing patient offence to find the open shot and knocked down a couple of threes. They were picking up offensive boards too with long rebounds just out of our reach. Knightsbridge opened up a margin however Mike Tye kept us in the game with 6 points for the half. Halftime score was 18-12. Morgan came back in the second half but was targeted again by the refs with 2 quick fouls that ended his game. Points were proving difficult to come by for both teams. Reggie started to find his shot including a 3 pointer and Hendo scored 4 for the half. Knightsbridge kept tacking along with a small buffer and had a response for everything. With 5 minutes to go Max finally hit a shot after struggling all game, and Mike Tye delivered a crafty 3 point play. The E's were 3 down with 2 minutes left but couldn't find a way to score. With 15 seconds left we had one final opportunity to tie the game but didn't get a good look at the basket, going down 34-30. Our veterans Reggie and Mike led the scoring with 10 and 9 points respectively. Thanks again to Sean for scoring for us.

This game also marks the probable end to Kobe's basketball playing career due to uncooperative knees. Best known for his crafty reverse layups he has been a great player and team mate around the club for many years. Also instrumental in the organisation of recent club social functions such as the annual Beergustation. He spent a large portion of this season sidelined with an ankle injury, however his return to the team sparked a late season flourish of wins. Cheers to Kobe.

Lady Reds v CityReach A - No game report. Win 26-18 - Rachel 9, Jordy 6, Alicia 5.

The girls have made back to back Grand Finals - they came from this position last year - finishing 3rd - getting through to the Prelim and beating a team that they had struggles with throughout the regular season to now face a team they have not beaten all season. It is the exact same scenario - Unley lost their 1st game of the season and have now won 19 in a row. They have some bigger more athletic players ... that all said, I won't count out the Reds. These girls know how to scrap - they are feisty and they will give it all that they have to win back to back.

Game Times Grand Finals:
A's v Gateway A - 6.00pm - Wayville Crt 1
C's v D's - 2.15pm - Wayville Crt 1
Lady Reds v Unley Park A - 4.45pm - Wayville Crt 1

2016 SACBA Finals Week 1

The stats are up to date to here.

If you have no game this week - A's, C's and G's ... we need you to still come out and support the teams. We are starting at 2 and going to 5pm. Guys will then go back to the pub for a cheeky one too I reckon.

To the reports:
A's v Gateway A (Semi Final) - The A's were down 10 with 94 seconds left - 31-41 ... they had not played great to that point. Gateway kept the scoreboard ticking over all game and the Reds were struggling to score in the 2nd half after being down 2 at halftime. Down 10 - Jack hit a 3, down 7, A's get a steal - ahead to Foo, missed the layup but tipped the loose ball to Jack ... 3 - down 4. Horskin got to the line, missed the 1st, made the 2nd ... down 5. Phil went left and made a tough lefty runner and was fouled - he made the free throw ... down 2 with 30 seconds. The Reds got a stop when they drew a charge. Down 2 with 10 seconds left Jack drove to the basket and finished a tough lefty. Score tied ... we are going to overtime. In the OT - Gateway got up by 4 with 2 minutes left ... Kerwin made a 3 and made a woooo noise. Gateway had 3 guys foul out (45 fouls called for the game) and the A's were in the penalty - A's kept going to the line - Jack made 2 of 4, Orks 1 of 2, Jack 2 of 4 and Liam 4 of 4 and the A's won by 4. It is one of the 2 best comebacks I have ever seen by a Reds team (Dillon's four 3's in the C's GF a couple of years ago being the other). It was an incredible game - and all timer ... play that scenario 100 times they only win this 1. Jack 21, Phil 12, Orks 11. Woo!

B's v SPOC A (Elimination Final)  - The B's have had a tough year - only winning 2 games - they have struggled to find their identity and dig themselves out of holes ... call in Super Coach Palk to give the boys a bit of structure. The B's started really strong - getting up 13-3 with Moops making a couple of FTs and a crazy layup on the break, Jono getting to the basket and making a tough shot, Dill, Brenno and Jono all made 3's. Saints started to come back with the Breheny brothers scoring 14 of Saints 16 points but the B's steadied with Moops making a couple of jumpers - Reds up 22-16. Brenno said in the break - if they win this half they could win the game ... Super Coach pointed out that if they won this half they would definitely win the game because they were winning ... that's why he is the Super Coach. Saints jumped out and scored the first 5 points to get the lead back to 1. From there is was an absolute arm wrestle - every time the Reds would score, Saints would score. Brendon showed crazy poise - making jumpers and runners, he scored 2 layups and got and converted an and-1. Jono made a couple of 3's and the Reds were keeping their noses in front. Saints just kept scoring, Gilmartin made one of his trademark ugly 3's, and a Breheny made a 3 that kept the game close. Up 3 with a minute to go Jono made a huge 3 to put the Reds up 6 but Gibbons came right back and hit a 3. Saints got a stop and had a shot for a 3 to tie it up ... missed and Phill gobbled up the board and was fouled. In his exuberance Phill slammed the ball on the floor - we all thought for sure the refs would call a tech ... but for once common sense prevailed and Steve didn't call it. Phill stepped to the line - a 32% career FT shooter and 29% this year ... made the 1st ... B's up 4 ... made the 2nd B's up 5 with 10 seconds left. Saints missed a 3 and the Reds won. This is has been a difficult year and outside in you can see that it has taken its toll, that when things get tough the heads go down a bit but they stayed together and every single time they needed a shot in the 2nd half Brenno and Jono pulled it together and got them there. The D was awesome and Phill and Jono killed it on the boards. B's win 52-47. Brendon 17, Jono 15, Moops 8.

This Week: B's v Gateway A @ 4.00 - Saints Crt 1

C's v D's (Semi Final) - The C's were missing Jamie and the D's were missing Stu and Foo. The C's D was stifling, the D's struggled to score, Krantz and Lachie dominated down low getting up 16 in the 1st half. The 2nd half was closer with Jay getting hot - the C's out scored the D's 21-16 in the 2nd half. C's won through the GF and the D's will face Unley Park this week. Win 46-21. Lachie 15, Jay 13, Thommo 11.

This Week: D's v Unley Park A @ 2.00 - Saints Crt 1

E's v F's (Elimination Final)  - The E’s and F’s faced off for the second week in a row, this time in the elimination final. The E’s eeked out a 3 point win last time however the F’s were bolstered by the returning Brad and Jon. The F’s got out to the better start with Moorfoot leading the way with 8 points for the half with some crafty inside moves. However the E’s stayed in touch and put on a 7 point run to close out the half and bring the scores back to 15-15. Road Train was battling away on the boards and drawing fouls, and all of a sudden Cam had 4 personals. Brad took over from Josh on the offensive end to keep the F’s in it. Max got a couple of open looks from 3 point range and knocked them down to stretch out a 6 point lead for the E’s. G and Jimmy also connected from range and Tone hit a long jumper. The defense from both teams was intense throughout without going over the top. The F’s called a time out with 14 seconds remaining and down by one, but they couldn’t get a final bucket in the furious last seconds. The E’s went out winner 32-31. Max had 12 points for the E’s and Moorfoot finished with 11 points for the F’s. For an elimination final that no one wanted it was played in great spirit by both teams. The E’s go on to face Knightsbridge in the semi-final next Saturday. Thanks to Sean for scoring for us again.

This Week: E's v Knightsbridge @ 2.00 - Saints Crt 2

G's v Big Sunday C (Elimination Final) - NO REPORT. Lost 30-53. The G's are eliminated from the finals after a tough year with lots of injuries and guys in and out of the team.

Lady Reds v St Casmir (Elimination Final) - The Lady Reds jumped out of the gates - up 20-0 after 10 minutes - Hannah, Alicia, Rachel and Tracey all getting fast break layups and then Alicia made a couple of 3's. As happens with St Casmir - they always have players arrive late and their 2 best players arrived and it made the game a grind. Halftime was 24-6. 2nd half the Reds had a bunch of layups but missed them and St Casmir kept grinding - Jordy got to the line a few times and converted and Alicia and Hannah made a couple of layups - Reds win 36-16. Alicia 10, Hannah 8, Jordy 7.

This Week: Lady Reds v CityReach A @ 3.00 - Immanuel Crt 2

Palky's Player of the Week - Finals Week 1: Max had an awesome game, Lachie was unstoppable, Brenno and Selfy were amazing ... but can't go past Jack Harford for his 3 huge clutch baskets and 21 points.

Wanna see something a little frightening

To the reports:
A's v SPOC A - The A's were missing Phil, Mick and Liam so they called for reinforcements from Stu and the prodigal son, Mr Red Pants Tom Hobbs. It was run and gun early - with both teams getting up and back. Reds turned the ball over too much and missed eay layups (including 5 in a row from Orks). Gibbo for SPOC was hot - Saints up 42-21 at halftime. 2nd half, everytime that Reds threatened to get back into it Gibbo or Yeo hit shots - Jack and Hobbs hit some 3's but too many mistakes cost the A's their 1st lost for the season. Loss 62-43 - Orks 14, Foo 12, Jack 9

This week: Qualifying Final - A's v Gateway @ 5.00pm - St Peters Crt 1

B's v Gateway A - For some reason the B's started in a man and realised when down 0-14 that it was not working. They switched to a zone and attacked all 3's - Brendon and Jono made a bunch of shots and Mitch hit a 3 - down 17-31 at halftime. 2nd half Reds got it back to 8 With Jono, Micth and Brendon making life tough but Phill fouled out and Gateway just piled on the points winning 40-65. Brendon 16, Jono 12, Mitch 9.

This week: Elimination Final - B's v SPOC A @ 4.00pm - St Peters Crt 1

C's v D's - The 7th time this year these teams have played and you can tell because we are getting on each others nerves a bit (which is not good for the club but it is what it is). I was quite the contest - D's got up a bit behind good shooting from Stu and Madman, C's came back with Jay and Jamie making shots, D's won with Stu and Thommo making shots late. Was a good finals preview. D's won 29-27. C's Jay 9, Jamie 6, D's Stu 14, Madman 6.

This week: Qualifying Final - C's v D's @ 3.00pm - St Peters Crt 1

E's v F's - Written by Max - Just our second derby game for the season, and again the F’s weren’t at full strength. With 3rd and 4th place on the ladder assured, the F’s were playing for a chance to move up to 2nd and secure the double chance in the finals, and the E’s just wanted a good run to maintain their recent momentum. The E’s got out to a quick start with patient ball movement resulting in some good inside looks, with Hendo, Morgan and Road Train all finishing around the hoop. At the other end the E’s defense was swarming, but 3’s from G and Jimmy kept the F’s in the game, halftime score 15-12. In the second half again the E’s got the early break with Simon knocking down a pair of 3’s, stretching the lead to almost 10. Cam wasn’t going to let the F’s go gently though and continued to bang inside, cleaning up on the offensive boards and getting to the free throw line with 8 points for the half. With a minute to go the E’s held a 3 point lead and the opportunity was there for the F’s if they really wanted it. Jimmy had a shot to tie the game but it clanged out. Final score E’s held onto win 31-28, Miller had 10 for the E’s and Cam had 10 for the F’s. A rematch this week in the elimination final will decide the best Reds team. With the top two teams in the league looking vulnerable, the premiership race is wide open for the victor.

This week: Qualifying Final - E's v F's @ 2.00pm - St Peters Crt 1

G's v Spicer A - NO REPORT. Loss

This week: Elimination Final - G's v Big Sunday C @ 1.00pm - St Peters Crt 2

Lady Reds v St Casmir - It was not a great contest - both teams struggled to score. Lady Reds were getting good looks but could make their open shots. Megan hit a 3 and a long 2, Tracey was scoring on the break - Reds up 13-8 at halftime. The Reds extended their pressure and this increased the tempo which St Casmir didn't handle very well but Reds still struggled from the field - Tracey was crafty around the basket, Alicia made a 3 and Jody made some FTs - Reds win against their Elimination finals opponent - 28-16. Tracey 10, Rachel 6, Jordan and Megan 5.

This week: Elimination Final - Lady Reds v St Casmir @ 1.00pm - Immanuel Crt 1

Palky's Player of the Week - Week 19: For his crucial 10 points in a game they should have thrown ... Simon Miller. A win is a win to Sime =)
