SAABL Division 2

B’s (Red 2) v Taperoo Taps by Brandon

The B’s came out to Saturday’s game having had a quality win against the Titans last week. We were looking to go above .500 and put ourselves back in to finals contention and with the return of Selfy it made us even more confident we could knock off Taperoo. The game started out slow with Selfy making a couple of 3’s to get our offense going. Krantz helping us out by crashing the boards and communicating on defence saw us take the lead 8 minutes in. Unfortunately, we couldn’t maintain the lead and were down at the half, but we were sure we could get it back if we exploited their terrible zone and turned the heat up on defence.

Changing to a man defence in the 2nd half saw Taperoo’s scoring dry up, but after expending so much energy on it we were unable to exploit it on the other end. Taperoo’s subpar defence meant that we were in the bonus with over 10 minutes to play. Instead of using this to our advantage we became too focused on drawing fouls and found ourselves in awkward positions, subsequently turning the ball over. It was a frustrating day for the team as we know that on paper, we’re a solid team who have the potential to be a threat come finals time. With the return of our full squad after Tim’s holiday in Hawaii (which we are all very envious of with some of the weather here) we’ll hope to find some synergy together as the season develops.

Score: Taperoo 47 defeat Reds 39

Points: Jon 16, Brandon 11, Gus 9

C’s (White 2) v Sacred Heart by Jon Foo

C’s were up against the undefeated Sacred Heart team and knew it would be a tough match. Sacred Heart came out hot hitting their first 3 shots from downtown jumping out to a 9-0 lead in a couple minutes. They were essentially playing 5 out on offense and so we adjusted to a man defence. After this we started to make some ground with Isaac scoring consecutive tough buckets inside. Dylan and Daniel hit 3s but Sacred Heart was tough to stop and started scoring inside. Dillon scores on a couple baseline jumpers and Morgan and Cam scored inside and we ended the half down by 10.

We started the second half on a 3-2 zone which worked ok while Sacred Heart dried up a little from 3. Dylan and Dillon kept up in it's with 3s and baseline jumpers respectively. Cam hit a pair of free throws and Morgan got some late buckets to keep us close. Ultimately we fell short by 7 but did a good job to win the second half.

Score: Scared Heart 60 defeat Reds 53

Points: Dylan 11, Morgan 10, Cam and Dillon 8

SAABL Division 3

All Stars v Saints Gold by Manners

This week saw the All Stars against a good Saints outfit - a credit to the growing strength of SAABL to field such a good side in 3rd grade.  The Stars started off well, with Madman hitting a baseline jumper and Stu with a 3 from the elbow - 5-0, and we wish the report could end there.

Saints were good, scoring the next 11 before another baseline J from Madman, followed by a 2 from BB and a three from Lunny and unfortunately that was the end of the good news from the Stars, down 14 at the half.

Second half opened up worst possible way for the Stars, Saints with two quick buckets and it got worse for the Stars from there. The Stars battled hard, especially on the boards but as has been the case all year, lamenting too many unforced turnovers (with equal contributions from all teammates in that regard). End score Stars lose by 34. Stars looking to get one this week against a weaker opponent.

Score: Saint Gold 65 defeat Reds 31

Points: Matt Williams 9, Stu 8, Lunny 7

E’s (Red 3) v Punjab Lions by Noah

This week we came up against the Punjab Lions in an intense matchup. Struggling for numbers, with Noah coming up from the G’s to give us a full lineup, the game was lining up to be a gruelling affair. The Lions opened up an early lead, getting up 9-2 in the opening five minutes. But behind some hot shooting from Ollie and strong rebounding from Jeremy we closed the gap to be down by only 4 at the half.

The second half was a see-sawing affair, with our zone defence holding them off quite well on the inside. But some hot shooting from Punjab kept it close with the game going down to the wire. The Reds took our first lead of the game with 8 minutes to go behind some strong drives from Tim and Noah. However, we were unable to hold off the bigger opposition in end, going down in a thriller.

Score: Lions 55 defeat Red 49

Points: Noah 16, Ollie 14, Tim 10

F’s (White 3) v East Adelaide Newbie by RT

I think it has been said before that our team is a strong Div 4 team. It was such the case on Saturday, with a game played against a strong Div 3 team. The end result was another case of same old same old. A clear loss, although, as usual in good spirits.
Things started reasonably well until the Newbies figured out that a bunch of 20 somethings could outrun a bunch of 30 and 40 somethings all day. Our total of 43 points isn’t too bad for us, but it was never going to be competitive against 71.

We had six 3 point shots in our total, including one from Nele (11 points total). Trev with 11 points as well, 3x3 and a 2. B-Rad with 10, unusually not the highest scorer. G with 6 from a couple of 3s, RT with 5 and some kind words from Lyn Wieland in her match review. Caldy only troubling the scorers with a foul. Beers by Nele, chips and shiny meat by RT.

Score: Newbies 71 defeat Reds 43
