Palky's Top 5 Favourite All Time Old Red's Saturday Teams - Honourable Mentions

Reminder that the Lawn Bowls night is Friday April 11th and the AGM is next Tuesday April 8th.

In the countdown to the start of the season new SACBA season on May 3rd - I thought I would do my Top 5 Favourite PAOCBC Saturday Teams. The one rule (other than the obvious one of they must be Old Reds team) is they had to be Champions.

I couldn’t do it without mentioning some of the great teams that missed out of the Top 5 (remember I only have stats from 1999 and the club started in 1993).

In no particular order:

1996 A's - This team had A, Sean, Nick Holden, Dar and Sar, Shane Moynihan and Chris Mann. I don't remember the grade, I don't remember the opponent ... I just remember Dar had 27 points in the best Grand Final ever played by an Old Red and the game was a blow out. I remember A and Nick Holden both hit 3's in the last 2 plays of the game.

2002 A’s – this was really the precursor to the decade of A’s dominance. This was Big A’s first year of leading the team in his own right. We were huge with a 3 big man rotation – we had “Caffeine” Jimmy Jones establishing himself as the best big man in the league, this was Grant Nalder’s first year in the A’s and Big A. The Wildman was the best scorer in the league and Darsow, Liam, Manner and Simon Miller as the other guards. Great team with so much depth. Look at Manner’s 3’s there … 18! They went 17-2 and won back to back titles. The next year they went up to A Grade.

2013 F’s – The only PAOCBC to ever go undefeated. They had 3 great guards in Brad Hughes, Dangerous Stu and Jay Nguyen. This was Stu’s first season back after 3 years on the sidelines with a knee injury. The team had no height other than Road Train Jon Read, so he had to play 40 most games. The role players of Jon, Phil, Udit and Brownie were all contributors. This team will be remembered for their 18 game win streak and the amazing Grand Final.

They got down a few baskets in the 2nd half – Brad rolled his ankle and was sidelined … but courageously came back on to lead the team. Stu, who had an ok year but no big games, tapped back into the well and had a 15 point 2nd half and hit a clutch 3 in the last minute. With the 10 seconds to go the game was tied. Phil drove and the ball ended up with Jay who hit the shot on the buzzer. Amazing game, amazing season.

2004 B’s – This is the only Old Reds team to ever finish 4th at the end of the regular season and win the title. We were 5th and were playing 4th in the last game of the season. They were they only team we hadn’t beaten all year – we had to win to just make the finals. We won. We won the Elimination Final easily. We went into the Prelim as underdogs and won by 30. Phil Motteram and I had our season high in those games. I remember coming to the final and our opponents “Aldgate” looked shocked that we had made it – they didn’t even know they were playing us. This was an advantage to us. We won the GF by 16. I top scored with 11, Max had 10. Matt Just hit 2 3’s … he had hit 1 up to that point in the season. Matt Just was incredible this year – he would have had 5 or 6 games of 10+ steals. Bigs – Brad, Phil, Foran – Guards Max, Roughie, BB and Palk. 4 months in to the season Wheats said he had enough and left the team.

2005 D’s – Before there was the 2013 F’s there was the 2005 D’s. This is the most dominant team in Old Reds history. It was veteran A’s and B’s players playing into the reformed D’s. Sean constructed a team of savvy veterans (who were way younger at that time than I am now) to do one thing – win a title. Their winning percentage is still the highest winning percentage in this history of the club and a record that I doubt will ever be beaten. They won a game 107-3 (a club record in points for in a single game and a club record for points against in a single game). To have 5 guys averaging over 8 ppg doesn’t happen often.

2013 C’s – This was an incredible team. They had 4 great bigs – Phill, Tomo, Kobe and Hendo, a timeless/ageless shooter in Madman, 2 great defensive guards and floor leaders in BB and Manner and G had one of the Top 3 shooting seasons in the history of the basketball club. The C’s were an incredible defensive unit, and through G they scored a lot of points. They only lost 2 games – both to Unley Park – the team they played in the Qualifying Final and Grand Final. In the Prelim, Unley Park played Box and 1 on G and Madman scored 14 points in the 2nd half to lead the C’s to the win. In the GF, Unley Park got up 13 after a hot start. They were again playing box and 1 on G – he hit two 3’s at the end of the 1st half to get the lead back to 7. In the 2nd half he scored 11 in one of the most inspiring displays I have ever witnessed by a Red. Phill had 15 in the GF too.

2002 C’s – I saw this team play 2 games all season as they were at another stadium but doesn’t stop them being mentioned. I mention them for 2 reasons. In a mid-season game A and I went out to watch them and they were then coached by Life Member Ben Christie. Ben gave a halftime address that will go down in the annuls as the most amusing coaching address I have ever heard … in the least intense voice I have heard from a coach he said “c’mon guys … where is the hustle … where is the intensity”. We still say it to this day. The main reason why this team makes it is because it was the first time I ever saw Matt “Rough Justice” Just and Mark “Max Power” Powell play. I said to some “I am going to win a title with those 2 one day”. At the end of the game – the C’s were down 1 with seconds left on the clock. Max drove and was fouled … the clock showed zeros. Max went to the line with 2 shots to win it. SWISH … SWISH. Game over.

2008 E’s – This was one of the most dominant teams. Corey MacLean came into the club with Jamie Young and George. Udit, Caldy, Nelly and Macca were young and enthusiastic and Vods came in mid-season to give them the big man they needed. Corey was incredible – he was a walking Triple Double machine. Did what needed to be done – could do anything on a basketball court (except dunk or stay un-injured). In the GF Corey scored 18 of his 21 in the 1st half in a lights out shooting display.

Welcome Back 2014

The Old Reds are back for 2014 ... the blog has been dormant for the off season ... but it doesn't mean we have been dormant. We have been doing fitness and skills training every Wednesday since November and have been doing team training since January. It is looking like another massive year for the basketball club following the most successful season in the history of the club.

2014 sees the A's start their campaign for a decade in the A Grade Grand Final - which must be one of the longest streaks in SA sports right now. The B's look to establish themselves again as one of the top A Grade sides and make their 1st A Grade Grand Final. The C's are looking to go back to back. The D's and E's are wanting to get to the top of the ladder after falling just short last year. The F's are rebuilding after an 18-0 season and the G's hope to follow up their reserve title win with a shot at the big dance. The girls are back with the same lineup as last year ... I think this is their year!

Strap yourselves in this is gonna a be a bumpy ride of highs and lows and a long and somewhat boring blog post about marriages, team selection, AGMs and Lawn Bowls.

Before I start I would like to, on behalf of the club, send congratulations to Matt Williams and Corey Gaard who got married over the weekend (not to each other) and to J-J-J-James Baker who will be getting married soon. Congrats lads – may your marriages bring you a lifetime of fulfilment with minimal nagging.

To basketball - it is looking likely that the Saturday season is starting on Saturday May 3 this year (games will be between 1-6pm).  This is to be confirmed. Most teams will again be at the Powerhouse or Cedar … again to be confirmed. We are looking to nominate 7 teams again and asking for them to be in the same or similar grades as last year.

I have managed to speak to most of you over the last few weeks about Saturday teams for this year. As with every season, we have had some major changes to player personnel.  The B’s have lost 4 players and this then has a flow on effect through the whole club – we have also lost some key guys from the D’s, E’s and F’s. We also have a few guys going away for big parts of the season so putting teams together has been very tough.

Again, as with every year, a lot of thought goes into putting together each side – it is a task that isn’t taken on lightly and we need to factor in many different things when deciding teams – namely – chemistry, mix of youth and veterans, future planning and rewarding potential, getting the balance of size, speed, ballhandlers, shooters, defenders, rebounders, role-players in each side … and not least of all personal preference. It is a difficult task – we are mindful to make sure to explain all decisions in honest and frank with manner and if you want to discuss your selection please feel free to contact me via email, text, Facebook, phone or in person – I will sit down and have a chat with you about the reasons behind the decision. Sometimes decisions are made on behalf of the club and teams over individual preferences … sometimes those are tough decisions but hopefully they are thought out informed decisions.  These decisions are not final – but they are pretty close to being the final squads … if you want to chat and talk about changing your team please feel free (last year we made a few late changes and we always factor this in). This is something that we put a lot of effort into because we know getting it right leads to winning premierships and preparing for the future (see; 4 premierships in 2013).

I will say “just because I want to play with my mates” is not a deciding factor for picking teams … if you want to play with your mates … start a social team.

Finally – unlike previous years – this year I believe there will be opportunities to move teams during the season. There will be some vacancies in some of the teams opening through players going away … so it is important to play hard, be a good teammate, get to training if possible because we take note of all of these things.

We welcome back a number of old faces (including a former club champion) and we have recruited 3 new players (at this stage in the F’s) who are friends of guys in the club. There have been a few guys who have moved teams – made possible by a couple of guys moving to a lower grade. It is this kind of unselfishness that creates the winning culture of our club.

So to the teams – even though you would have looked already.

Social Event #1 - Old Red Lawn Bowls

The first social function for the year is a new idea – it is the 1st Annual Old Reds Lawn Bowls Tournament.

We are going to run a $10 to enter knockout, winner takes all Lawn Bowls tournament. All participants will be put into a hat – draw an opponent at random – each match will consist of 2 ends, the winner advances and the loser is knocked out and will have to comfort themselves with the joys of alcohol. If you are thinking … “pfffft Lawn Bowls Palky … that sounds lame”. Trust me, it is a stack of fun, we have the great venue all night, drinks are cheap, we can play our own music and have the run of the place … it is like a pub but with a sport we can compete in at the same time.

1st Annual Old Reds Lawn Bowls Tournament Details:
When: Friday 11th April (6.00pm for 6.30pm start)
Where: Adelaide Lawn Bowls Club (opposite PAC on Dequetteville Tce).
Cost: $20 - $10 to enter tournament and $10 for lawn bowls hire. Buy own drinks.

Please RSVP to me … I am not sure why I write this because none of you ever RSVP and I end up texting you all or Facebook’ing you.

All friends, family and partners welcome.

2013 Club Lunch

Hey all,

Thanks for attending the Club Lunch this year - was an incredible day (weatherwise as well as the frivolity). It was one of the most enjoyable Club Lunches in recent memory and it was because of the great group we had there - I had so much fun. I would like to go into specifics but due to potential employers having something known as "Google" I will let those stories become mythology and folklore ... count yourself lucky "you know who".

Thanks to Sean for taking great photos of the day which you can view here.

Congrats to all the players that won MVPs and Best Team Players for their teams, Sean Heylen Medals, Best Club Men and Club Champions.

Nathan Graham had a big day picking up the biggest personal award - he was a well deserved Club Champ. He has finished 2nd three times now and it great to see his name on the trophy. I overheard some heartfelt congratulations to G - a worthy winner. G also became a life member of the club and gave a great speech.

Mike Hill also had a solid haul with the Sean Heylen Medal for best player in the Intercol and MVP of the B's. Below are all the award winners.

It has been proposed we might do some fitness stuff in November and December - just to stave of the Xmas Pie gut, but will let you know.

Not going to wax lyrical about the great season we had - it has been done enough. Great season and hope you like the blog and stats. Palky
